I think it really depends upon the part of the city where you live/work as we have several good banks.

North Community Bank has many branches on the northside and also Loop/Wicker Park/West Town locations. I have banked with them for years and never had a bad experience. Their checking account is 100 percent free even without direct deposit.
Here is a link to their locations: https://www.northcommunitybank.com/locations_branch.htm

Don't like WaMu. They got too big too fast.

Oh and they don't give you free ATM use... in fact if you do it more than 3 times in one month THEY charge you too!!

I've used Harris Bank since I opened my first savings account as a kid (although back in those days it was Household Bank). Not many ATMs tho.

Fifth Third is good. Very friendly people and easy to navigate website which is key for the online banking.

North Community Bank just had all 7-11 store ATM's added to their shared surcharge free network (Allpoint).

I have had no trouble with Chase. They have more ATMs and I like their on line banking and pay all my bills via computer.

I know tooooo many people that have gotten screwed over by Chase.
How'd you get screwed by Chase?

I like Chase, if you move to another city they're so big they might be there. Their credit card has CASHBACK! - And is convenient online pay and banking. Checking is free with direct deposit or if you use debit card 6 times a month. Mortage rate is lower if you use automatic withdrawal from your account.

Most large banks have these same benefits

Actually believe it or not my local bank-North Community Bank has way more Atm's (about 37,000) via the Allpoint network than Chase (about 14,000) does.

Just about every bank has online banking and online bill pay now.

The OP mentioned Bank of America, and a former coworker said they were good for a mortgage because they have unemployment mortgage insurance payments - that pay your mortgage while unemployed ... very nice safety net! But this is BOA Houston though...
