I am hearing on the news that free rides, for senior citizens, are costing the CTA $30 million. Someone from CTA reports that since March 08 they have given away 91,000 rides. If you do the math a years worth of free rides, at the same rate, would be 182,000. CTA fare is $1.75 a transfer is an additional $.25. Assuming all of these freeloading seniors also got a transfer the CTA would loose $364,000.00 a far cry from the $30 mil claimed. Even assuming this program will snowball and twice as many freeloading seniors will take advantage it's still less than $1 mil. Is there something wrong with my math or logic or is, and it hurts to say this, Blogo right and the CTA is lying.

Would the CTA lie to you? Chicago government is world famous for it's honesty and integrity.

I guess I should have been clearer. I know I'm being lied to I just am not sure who is lying, CTA, Blogo, media. They all have been so reliable in the past.

Maybe they're all lying, and neither scenario is the truth.

You either read, or heard, it wrong. It's 91,000 free rides a day.

That makes much more sense. That number seemed extraordinarily low!

yep. it's 91,000 free rides per day. look on page 7. it's just going to continue to get worse for those of us who aren't old, disabled or slaves to the US military.

I would encourage people to go to a CTA board meeting. You will learn A LOT more than what the news is telling you, because they grab one sensational thing and run for the hills with it. For instance, they're down to less than 10% slow zones on the rails, most of the construction projects are actually on time AND on budget, plus they managed to save some money by leasing some of the buses instead of buying new ones outright (I don't remember how much).

by the way, the agency would have had a $200,000 surplus for last month if the governor hadn't vetoed the reduced fare subsidies.

see how much I learned going down there for a couple of hours?

Media got us again. They said 91,000 since March. They may have meant 91,000 a day since March but that is not what they said.

That's why I just don't even listen anymore. I'll just stick to going to the board meetings and ignoring the news. I definitely plan on going next month because that's when Huberman will unveil next year's budget. I'll report on it for you guys.
