Chicago is definitely more of an alt-rock city -- it seems hard rock is more prevalent in the suburbs. The best suggestion I can make is to check out the Myspace page for the Cobra Lounge, which is the city's best known local hard rock venue, and check out the bands listed on their events schedule, and look up their myspace pages to give them a listen.

Two of my local faves (though they may be considered too alt-rock to qualify as traditional "hard rock") are The Assembly and Swizzle Tree. I don't know why Swizzle Tree only has three tracks on their page. They used to have more. But it should be enough to give a good idea.

It seems like Chicago should be more of a hard rock city rather than Alt rock just from the cities personality now San Francisco that's diffenitley an Alt rock city for sure. I don't know just thought

I think its too hard to categorize any single city by one "sound", especially one as large as Chicago. In general I would say Chicago has a thriving independent music scene which comprises a whole lot of different sounds. You can browse some of the other local clubs and look at the typical stuff that gets booked.

yea, I like them too, although they also book a lot of comedy/standup shows. I saw Local H's 7 night stand there. (btw, solid long time Chicago hard rock band)

It has a healthy seen. A lot of rock/indie/alt rock bands are from Illinois in general.

Here's a general list of musicians from Illinois:
