Three dead at the Hotel Chateau (Chicago: rental, mattress, house)

Three people were found dead at the Hotel Chateau (3838 N. Broadway) late yesterday afternoon of apparent drug overdoses.

I wonder if any of them were one of the assorted people that attempt to panhandle money from me on a regular basis as I try to run errands.

I avoid that area like the plague unless I'm driving. I had one yell at me when I told him no a few months back. I was coming out of IHOP with my 7 year old nephew. Scumbags.

I think it can be rehabbed into a nice vintage rental building full of co-eds.

Maybe a sorority house of some sort? Or in keeping with a social mission, a home for girls in trouble?

The building has architectural merit and could be converted into something. It would be nice to maintain retail at the base along the sidewalk.

Seems like they got a bad package, to say the least. Either an intentional "hot shot" or else the gang that cut their dope didn't know what the heck they were doing. This is why they tell drug addicts to test a small amount first, to see how potent it is.

I don't understand what the significance of the Hotel is in this story. Could somebody explain? Would it have been better if they all died in an alley instead?

The hotel is a notorious flophouse. The fact that they charge by the hour should tell you something. Check out summary i ran across:

Since staying at this hotel I've witnessed:

1. Prostitution, any time of the day or night (on the second/third floors).

2. Power outtages for hours on end.

3. Wires in the circuit breakers popping and sizzling.

4. Mass Roaches and Bed Bugs (which are widespread throughout the bldg.)

5. Mucus all over the elevator doors, walls, and floor.

6. Hearing and seeing Domestic Violence.

7. People smoking crack in the back of the building.

8. Drunks threatening to slice one another's throat, etc..

9. Plugged up sinks for weeks.

10. One mattress after another with various stains: blood, hair, etc.

11. Out of order washing machines.

12. Seeing people with large sores from bed bugs all over their bodies.

13. Watching tenants hang out and drug deal within the building and also between the Carlos Hotel and Chateau.

14. Seeing tenants beg for change in front of starbucks, either because they're greedy or want someone to pay for their drug habit.

I do not if anyone heard about this, but another person was found dead (of an apparent overdose yet again) at the "hotel" on October 21st:

As I was doing research on the above story, I found a story about a woman that fell or was pushed out a window there in Sept. 2007. I did not hear about this incident at the time it occured.
