I left in the 80's too and I remember cable was not available. Thank you for the info. because now I can start researching. I have Cingular for a cell phone and I really like it.

What does GA stand for?

Cable might be better now. Cable where we live now (GA) is more reliable but I have found that the "bundles" don't really save me. I have DSL from Bellsouth and satellite from Dish Network and cell phone service from T Mobile.

Dish network: do they provide the local news? Is it extra? Approx. how much a month for service, installation, local channels and any hidden cost?

The two major cable companies are RCN and Comcast. You often don't have a choice between those two. You can go to their websites and see if it's available at your address. Other internet companies include SBC (which also has phone lines). I've never had problems with my cable service in Chicago, but yes, I agree that it is very expensive. The last four years or so, I had Comcast for both internet and cable and they were fine. I believe those two came in a package (they often have promotions), but I never had a home phone.

I am pretty sure only Comcast serves 60634.RCN is only close to the lake right now. AT&T has some bundles also that you might want to check out.

They provide the local channels. They are $6 a month. The rest depends on the package you get from them. We have the top package of 250 channels for about $53 a month. If you sign up for a year, they will give you free installation and a DVR too.

If you are renting-- Cable is sometime already included in your rent.

You've got Comcast and RCN. Usually you don't have a choice. Both of them are terrible, but my RCN experience was perhaps a very small tad bit better than Comcast.
If you can avoid dealing with Comcast in Chicago, by all means do it. I'd get a dish if my condo building alllowed it.
