I know you guys get these questions all the time..

I'm 22, and will be going to DePaul in January. Originally from the NYC area. I need something insanely affordable (under $800 inc. utilities). I'll be living by myself, so a studio would be fine.

Areas I'm looking at ~ Bucktown, Logan Square, Ravenswood, Albany Park (over by Kedzie & Lawrence), Andersonville.. maybe Edgewater and Rogers Park. Wicker Park, Wrigleyville, and Lincoln Park will definitely be too expensive.

Anyway, here's some addresses. If any of you live around these areas, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

1716-1734 West Thome (60660)
1062 West Bryn Mawr Avenue (60660)
5550 North Kenmore Avenue (60640)
4701 North Beacon (60640)
5633 North Kenmore (60660)
3552-58 W. Leland (60625)
5139 North Lincoln Avenue (60625)

None of these places are particularly dangerous but you can expect to hear about a mugging or two in the immediate vicinity of most of them. The one that I would have considerable reservation about is the Beacon Avenue address. There's a bit of a gang turf war going on in that area with the attendant flare-up in crime. Most of the problems have been on the east side of Broadway Avenue but there has been some spillover onto the west side as well.

Your best bet for safety would be the Lincoln Avenue address. The potential downside is this is the address of all those listed with the most lengthy commute to DePaul, though it's still manageable. Additionally, the nightlife in that neighborhood (known colloquially as Lincoln Square) is more for the 30s to 40s crowd than the 20s crowd. (Same goes for Andersonville by the way, but it's still a fine neighborhood.) If you're looking for more of a 20s crowd, you might reconsider looking around in Lakeview and Wrigleyville; every once in a while you'll find a small studio in the $700-800/mo range.

Would say the Lincoln Ave. address is the safest. It's the edge of Lincoln Square -- generally the safest neighborhood among the addresses you've listed. Would be advisable to get something closer to the Brown Line, though. How about:

Chicago Reader Classifieds | Real Estate | Housing for Rent | LINCOLN SQUARE STUDIOS

or

Chicago Reader Classifieds | Real Estate | Housing for Rent | 4538 NORTH ARTESIAN.

I live pretty close to these and, you know, haven't died.
Yet.

Bucktown is just as expensive, if not more so, than Wicker Park. You can probably afford something in Lakeview if you can afford Bucktown or Andersonville. But you'll get more for your money further north.

Here's how I would rank the costliness of the neighborhoods you listed, from most expensive to least:

1. Lincoln Park
2. Wrigleyville (part of Lakeview)
3. Bucktown
4. Wicker Park
5. Andersonville (part of Edgewater)
6. Ravenswood
7. Edgewater (the rest of the neighborhood)
8. Logan Square (parts away from Bucktown gentrification)
9. Rogers Park
10. Albany Park (parts away from Ravenswood Manor, which is more expensive)

Numbers 7-10 vary so wildly that they are probably the least accurate.

You should be careful in Avondale. It's not as safe as you think, and there are some major gang issues.

The "safest" on that list is 5139 North Lincoln Ave.

As far as getting a studio with utilities included for $800 or under it can be done in Wrigleyville,Wicker Park, and even Lincoln Park. I know this because I never have paid more than $650 with utilities included for a studio EVER and I may be moving soon. It can be done.

I saw that 444 West St James has studios for $570, in Lincoln Park. Anyone know how those are?

Also, I'm going to be paying rent with student loans and a part time job. Any student friendly apartment complexes? I will most likely need a cosigner, right?

The area is fine. As far as the apartments themselves; I have no idea. I might go look at one myself soon.
