In my experience, trick or treating takes place on Halloween, early evening (just like it did when I was a kid). If I'm home, I buy candy and give it out until I run out and then turn off my lights. Last year I had quite a few kids and ran out of candy. I know that some suburbs have designated days that aren't (for some reason) actually on Halloween and set hours, but I'm fairly certain my neighborhood does not. If they do nobody pays any attention to them.

^^Rad. I'll actually be around to hand out for part of that. I still think I'll be getting trick or treaters at 9:30 though.

First of all, people who trick or treat in the city of Chicago are not idiots. We live in Bridgeport which the Chicago Sun Times just listed as the BEST place to trick or treat! We all sit on our porches and the neighbors all talk and have fun as we hand out candy to the hundreds and hundreds of kids who come by. People drop off their kids from other neighborhoods AND the suburbs. It's a lot of fun and very family friendly. As for hours - most people hand out candy from 4pm or so until 9-10pm or when they run out. WHen you run out, you turn off the lights and lock the door. I did see kids out there about an hour ago, but the MOST traffic will be dinner time to 9pm or so. A trip down any street east of Halsted in Bridgeport will net a kid a LOT of candy and a family a LOT of fun! (Emerald, Union, Lowe, Wallace, Parnell...etc.)

Trick or treating in the city is awesome! Who ever would say that only an idiot would take their kid out is an idiot themselves and they should just stay at home in the burbs. The hours for trick or treating are 3-7 p.m. as posted on haunted Illinois for the city of Chicago. Happy Halloween!

There must be hundreds of thousands of idiots in Chicago.
We used to do it all the time growing up.

trick or treating is awesome, Halloween is probably the most social holiday out there - go Celts! - can't wait to take my daughter out & then scare the bejeebuz outta kids and parents the rest of the evening.

It starts when it gets dark and goes 'til 9pm or so. Most people are long out of candy by then....
