I think the cabinet he puts together will tell if he is going to follow through on his message of unifying and bipartisanship or if he goes too far lefty/liberal. He won a lot of moderate white voters who do not neccesarily vote based on party affiliation. If he does not govern from a centrist position, look for mid-term elections to swing heavily back to the Republicans. This happened to Clinton in '92 and to Bush in '02, both presidents lost their party majority in Congress.
I also think it will be good for the urban areas. All the House members from large urban areas are now Democrats. Mr. Obama will be open to the needs of the large cities. I think it will be very good for Illinois and Chicago as far as government money flowing in bigger amounts to our area. It may help get the new technology, clean coal research center that was supposed to be built near Mattoon back to our state. Pres. Bush "hijacked" it to Tx.
Even though I voted McCain, I certainly do not have a "the sky is falling" mindset about Mr. Obama winning. He ran an extremely shrewd and strategic campaign and if he approaches the presidency this way, he might be able to get some positive things done.
I am thrilled that the Senate does not have a fillibuster-proof majority. I think that's an important check on the liberal wing of the Democrats (Pelosi/Reid) to keep them from hijacking Obama's quest to govern from the center. I hope the Republicans learn from this bloody nose they got. Learned that they too, need to govern towards the center in a bipartisan way. Learned that the citizens are fed-up with partisan, name calling politics of verbose inaction.

This is nothing but great news for Chicago. Chicago already had great influence in the Senate with Dick Durbin and the House with Rahm Emanuel et al, and now the presidency. And for the first time since John Kennedy (or perhaps FDR), we've got an urban president who is sensitive to urban issues. And I'm not using "urban" as a code word for "black" like BET does. I'm including the suburbs in this description, for Obama is from a very typically American large metropolitain area--unlike our fake cowboy George W. Bush on his fake Texas ranch. To me, Chicagoans will see better transportation policy, urban planning policy, and more reasonable, mainstream positions on gun control and social issues.

Lookout why can I never rep you; it makes me sad. Stop saying such smart stuff.
But cubsoxfan, I did rep you. I am so sick of partisan politics. I grew up hard right and have been shifting left ever since, slowly but surely, but I am often shocked and annoyed by how folks on the left and the right can't seem to have a grown up conversation without name calling and unfair attacks.

I'll take the complement! Thanks!
I'm sure others will slam me, though.

Um, his house is north of Hyde Park Blvd. Barely, but it is north of it, thus his house is in Kenwood.

Isn't that why Republicans favor corporations, because they allow businessmen to avoid personal responsibility?
One thing's for sure, we haven't seen much "personal responsibilty" from Republicans during the financial shenanigans of the past several years.

President Obama will be good for Chicago and Illinois. If anything, his being president will keep our politicians on their toes to keep their noses clean (excuse the mixed metaphors). The national and global media will be beaming a spotlight on Illinois for at least the next 4 years. No one will want to get caught with his pants down.
