Was that when Senator Paul Douglas lived there, Muhammad Ali, ex-Attorney General Ed Levi, Congressman Abner Mikva, Mayor Harold Washington (and his Republican campaign opponent) or Senator Carol Mosely-Braun? All of them lived there during some overlapping periods. Just what time period are you referring to so I can bracket it?

Probably the time when it was overwhelmingly African-American, before it was gentrified and considered "hip". I know, God forbid a neighborhood maintain a good reputation if its completely overrun with... gasp... "minorities".

The islands are ideal place for a former President to "clear brush"

Hyde Park has never really been "sketchyville". It's long been surrounded by "sketchyville" though, and the "sketchyvillians" do make their way in at times to cause some trouble.

I think Hydewood/Ken Park will go back to it's normal self after January 20th, with the exception of a few days a year. Do you really think people are going to care about a secretive security detail when Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson live nearby? Have you SEEN the security at Farrakhan's place? Whoa.

I've gone past that house most weekdays for 20 years. It does not have heavy security. By the way neither Jesse Jackson Sr. or Jr. has ever lived in Hyde Park.

Hyde Park has never had a higher percentage of black folks than it has today. And that percentage has been stable for 30 years.

Reading this and other threads I'm beginning to wonder if Banx has ever visited the south side.

Maybe not, but alot of people I know consider it the Harlem of Chicago along with Bronzeville. Yeah maybe way back in the day it was rich, white folk but I always grew up with the idea it was the black cultural hub of Chicago since I was a little kid. And everybody I knew from Hyde Park was black unless they were Lab School students. And I can guarantee you alot of people think Hyde Park might have been "sketchy" because of the black presence there. Not that I agree obivously.

That was sort of my point. You don't mention the south side at times where it would seem to give significant evidence to the contrary of your main point (that hipsters are taking over everywhere, majority minority neighborhoods are hip, whatever). I have places in east beverly and north woodlawn and spend a good deal of time traveling between the two on public transit. Your description of the city is nothing like what I experience. Of course I get your point and am sure it is true to some extent, but I think you overstate it.

fair enough, I've spent alot of my time on the north side throughout some of my more memorable years so I refer to it more. My dad currently is staying down in the Birdgeport/Bronzeville area and I'm at the dorms at Columbia College right now. I get down in that area when I can but don't know as much about it as the north or west side.
