Is this an actual lady who sells tamales on the street? I haven't had a tamale in 7 years, I'm coming back to visit my family in March and plan on stuffing myself for a week solid, preferably with Mexican food.

To the OP... I know! How great is Chicago!

One of my favorite moments of the night in many Chicago dive bars is when the guy comes in with the cooler full of tamales. Some are bad. Some are decent. A few are actually really good. Either way, it's a welcome sight for drunken eyes in bars that don't serve food of their own.

Ah, the tamales guy. I've tried to set up a home delivery with my local dealer, but he never follows through. The guy's carved up a pretty good niche for himself, though. I've seen him in bars all over the city, and everytime he walks in, he walks out a few minutes later with a few less tamales in the cooler. Its gotta add up after a while. He's like the Frank Lucas of northside tamale distribution.

I went with a friend and had a cemita milanesa and it was really great. The avacado mellows the chipotle, the bread is delicious (crusty and seedy on the outside, super soft inside), and the pork was cooked perfectly.

The tacos arabes were really great, too. I'd want that super-thin pita in place of a tortilla any day of the week.

Thanks for the rec, even if it did take me forever to go there and even longer to tell you guys that I'd made it...

Thanks for the report. This place is just brilliant, ain't it...

I still haven't tried the Cemita Atomica yet... maybe this week.

I never knew about this place until after seeing the program on the Food Network several weeks (a month?) ago. I went and absolutely loved it, and have returned for multiple visits. The cemita milanesa is outstanding. From what I could tell, business seemed to be thriving. I'm sure the show helped. Regardless, the food was fantastic...I just wish I hadn't needed a television program to discover it.

This explains why the Mexicans are so religious-- god's been a fan of the cemita.
