It's ok over there, though I'd be careful walking around alone late at night. In the day it's fine -- lots of activity and you can walk to Treasure Island, the Hyde Park Produce Market, all of the restaurants on 53rd, Harper Court, etc.

Do you think I could still go to a grocery store walking after work myself around 6 and be fine or is it better to just wait until Saturday morning?

It's completely fine. I was talking more like midnight. There are a lot of people out and about -- kids, families, students -- and nothing visibly shady going on at all. It's a good area overall, but Hyde Park tends to shut down at 10 or 11 and it's easy to find yourself feeling isolated at those hours.

Also for excellent homemade gelato and very good coffee I recommend swinging a few blocks west to the new Istria Cafe on 51st and Cornell (at the Hyde Park Art Center).

That is great information, thanks. I know about the one by 57th street and I love it. I didn't realize there was a second location.

new location is a much bigger and more impressive place to hang out. Great seating, long bar, etc.

While we're at it there is an excellent new cafe/gourmet mini-grocer (Z&H) on 47th near Kimbark. Not too far a walk for you either. Try their deli sandwiches and Clover coffee press. Hyde Park is waking up from 40-year slumber.
