What gives.

Do you live near Broadway by any chance? From Irving Park to Belmont they always have been out in force.

Yes absolutely. I've worked in the Loop since l977 and have gone there everyday. Lately, as I walk to my bus stop on Adams and Clark, there have been people approaching me for money. Usually pan handlers are fixed in one place but now they seem to come up out of no where and ask for cash. One man approached me and said "I am not going to hurt you and I mean no harm. But I need money and have no job and I have kids". I had a dollar in my pocket and quickly gave it to him. Similar things have happened a few times which is more than has happened in the past.
My guess is crime will be on the rise too. In my low crime suburb, a jewelry store was broken into and there have been cars broken into too.
Be careful.

I find that being a tall blond woman in stilettos with a completely apathetic look on my face has made people avoid troubling me in public.
You should try it sometime.
The food guy I've seen around a lot. I asked him once if he used the same kid, or if he just switched it up, and if so, where were they coming from? Anyways, I hate the hustlers; no, you do not need $10 to get to your mother's funeral. I don't want to play games with these people, I just want them to stop insulting my intelligence and beg like normal hustlers. And honestly, why don't these people freeze to death?

It's a myth that crime rises in tough economic times. In spite of the high-profile bank robbers like Dillinger and Bonnie/Clyde, the Great Depression was actually a relatively low crime period in American History.

Avengerfire, yes, I do live near Broadway. I live on Clark. They have definitely always been out but now more than ever, maybe? Or at least that's what it seems like.

I would say over the last 5-10 years there seems to be more lately this year than in other years in that time frame.
