The heart of the city aka downtown (and areas really close to it) tends to be lower in many crimes than in most areas of the city.

The Fulton River District is quite old. Until the last few years not too many people lived in it however. This area is home still to many packing companies and warehouses. FRD has been that type of area for 150 years or so.

west loop/loop is fine. but have fun with the green line lol. let's just put it this way, my white and latino friends always called it "the slave ship". It serves the deepest, darkest depths of the south and west side, nowhere ull want to be going. if ur not familiar with the city, jus use it to transfer to other lines.

Well first off delete that other post with the directions. It is too long and did not come out totally clear when you copied and pasted it.

Sure, if u want to go to midway or the southwest side of Chicago (like Pilsen, or Brideport), that is fine.

Here is some more travel advice:
-The Blue Line: If u want to get to the near west/far northwest part of the city (like Bucktown, Wicker Park/Logan Sqaure, etc.) or O'Hare airport transfer to the blue line at Clark/Lake.
-The Red Line: If u want to get to the north side (Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Lincoln Park, Rogers Park, etc.) or south side (Chinatown, Bridgeport, Bronzeville, etc.)transfer to the blue line at Clark/Lake, take it 3 stops to Jackson, and then transfer to the red line.
-The Pink Line: I have never ridden in my entire life, and doesn't really seem to serve a big purpose to most, unless u live in the suburb of Cicero.
-The Brown Line: mostly serves the more residential neighborhoods of the of the North side (further west than the red line, but not as far west as the blue line). probably wont be too important to u, but u can board it at Clark/Lake as well.
-The Green Line: I haven't ridden this one too much either, only a couple of times. It serves the most crime ridden parts of the south and west sides. On the south side it runs parallel to the red line with alot more stops than the red line (serves more or less the same neighborhoods as the south side red line). So it's useful if you're looking for a more specific location of the south (or west) side, but I doubt you will really have much of a reason to ride this.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hope this helps.

When I said creepy as you go east, I just meant creepy the way the loop is creepy at night, stores all closed, empty high rises, whereas a bit further west, it's still a little empty, but it's residential so at least it feels like people are around. It's just a feeling, I'm not saying that it's more or less dangerous one way or the other.

we live right around where you'll be staying, an easier way to get to wicker park/bucktown from where you'll be staying is to walk to fulton and des plaines and take the 56 bus. The bus gets kinda slow sometimes, but will get you to wicker park in a bout 10 minutes. it's also on the CTA bus tracker so you can find out what time it's coming before you leave the house!

btw a nice jewel osco just opened up at des plaines and kinzie, it's quite close to where you'll be and it's very convenient
