To the OP:
I would stay away from McKinley Park if I were a newcomer to the city. I would not recommend moving there.

Thanks everyone! By the way, how soon should we look at apartments? Like officially start looking, right now I am looking but just kind of trying to get an idea of the neighborhoods. Would June be a good start or should we wait until July? Thanks for everyones help, I really do appreciate it!

you should begin your search just 1.5 months in advance, always ask big apartment blgs if they do annoying 24 hour specials that are pretty good, but literally end after 24 hours if you haven't made a decision! They can't start the clock ticking until you fill out the sheet to get your tour.

oops
meant to ask you to please click that link for crime data. South Shore isn't really downtown, and I don't think that area is very good based off of my experiences. You don't want to use the public transportation there at night for example.

No, no, no! A thousand times, NO!! That area is in the bullseye of one of Chicago's high crime hellholes. I used to live near there, so stay away. In fact I recommend that small-town newbies stay away from Chicago's inner south side altogether until they learn the city better.
