How Did Chi Become A Gang City?
Why do cities like Chicago and L.A have a history of gang problems? Are there circumstances particular to these cities that contribute to gang formation?

There isn't a large city in the US that doesn't have gangs.

Yeah but Chicago(and L.A) seem to be more gang oriented cities as far as street crime. Also as far as other cities several cities and towns around America have gangs that are Chicago based. Chicago's Latin Kings gang can be found on the east coast.

the word "gang" now has such a stereotype of minorities in a ghetto shooting each other. honestly some of the original gangs were groups of euro minorities fighting a different minority. big cities have ALWAYS had a history of gangs. when people say a town has suddenly become over run with gangs, it really is just getting bigger. the more people who come, the more good AND bad that comes. LA, Chigago, NYC, NOLA, they've always been big cities and always had issues with gangs. As they grew, the gang's influence did too and it spread out. now it's spreading everywhere, to suburbs and even rural areas. sad, but true.

Once, when I was at a gang-prevention meeting here in Charlotte, I asked a question stating that I was from Chicago....
and the gang prevention guy said "oh! the city with the ORIGINAL gangs!". Like another poster said...ask Al Capone, because the mob and their organization during the prohibition...and, their history in Chicago is the reason why there are gangs in Chicago. They "grew" from those beginnings...

There were gangs in Chicago long before Al Capone...
19th Century Chicago was a rapidly changing place where people would literally disappear without a trace in the large millieu of new faces. The city grew so rapidly that services couldn't keep up. No one even truly knows the crime levels during that time period because the police force was poorly organized and immigrants were moving to the city in droves. It was a sort of "Wild West" mentality where corruption and vice flourished, and they just never went away. The city was born of corruption and crime... and capitalism!

If not for Lincoln the most famous Illinoisan would be Al Capone.
