Nice catch on the bytes and bits..as for Uverse , my understanding is that AT & T would need to completely wire a high-rise to provide it for a building, as it is fiber-optic based.. that'll make for some interesting negotiations when cable contracts come up in newer buildings in a few years.. They're focusing on single-family and low-rise areas, and mostly the burbs first. In other words, they can't use the existing infrastructure or wiring like changing from one broadband provider in a building to another could. I had asked an AT & T tech about U Verse in the downtown area, and he thought it was a few years off .

Argh!!! Everything was running fine when the cable completely cut off again. Called RCN who said that they can't see my modem and will send a tech out the following day. Of course, the Internet magically starts working again. Tech comes, can't find anything wrong. Works fine and then I started noticing intermittent drops again last night. They said that they were going to do a 24hr ping test. We'll see!

U-Verse uses fiber optic cable to the utility box in the street. It does NOT require fiber optic inside buildings, although some new buildings are being constructed this way. Existing apartments can get U-Verse using existing coax cable or Cat5 wiring in the building and in some cases it can use newer telco wiring.

I have RCN and have had no such problems the last few days. It has to be the wiring or connections in your building.

OK , Thanks .. I only spoke to a tech who was taking a break from another task , so that's fairly good news for those of us who might want to explore this option when the current cable contract is renegotiated by our association ( if it's viable then) .. He might have been referring to the boxes/bonding circuitry versus the internal network .. Some co-workers who have it in the'burbs love it ( but there are still a few bugs here and there..)
