I remember when my area code changed from 312 to 708 when I was a kid. Then I moved to chicago proper and it was 312 again, and then it changed to 773. My cell phone is 312, has been so since 2001, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

What's the difference between area codes? I'm moving to Chicago in a couple weeks... just trying to learn as much as possible. I assume it's based on location.

Here's how it works i think
312- Downtown
773- city proper
708- mostly cook county suburbs
630- Dupage county- western burbs
815- Will County (far south burbs)???- Could be wrong
847- Northern burbs- Lake county

What's that t-shirt you see as baby gifts in Lake View? Is it "Mommy don't go 630!" or something like that?

You are indeed correct.
An interesting note:there were actually some parts of the city that got changed to 708 from 312 near O'Hare and down by Midway though now they are properly in 773.
All of the burbs got 708 at first. Then they brought in 630 for the west burbs and 847 for north & northwest burbs leaving 708 for the south and southwest burbs as well as parts some of the close western and northwestern burbs. I believe 815 was around for a long time for all of northern Illinois that was not in the city and burbs.
224 and other overlays were the last ones to come in.

I prefer 312 because that was the area code I was born in and grew up in.

I used to have a 312 area code.... in St. Charles. Needless to say, that was a long time ago.
I'm a hybrider myself: 630 area code for land-line, 773 for cell phone.

708 covers the southern half of the Cook County suburbs; the northern half is in 847, which covers the northern half of Kane County. Plus 224 is an overlay on top of 847, but is for cell phones only. 331 is a cellphone overlay on top of 630 and 779 is a cell phone overlay on top of 815.
Speaking of which, 815 is a geographically large area code. It does indeed cover Will County but it also extends all the way to the Iowa border, covering Rockford, Freeport and Galena.
Oh, and don't forget the Indiana suburbs over in 219.

Yeah I think 312 cut off around St. Charles before they brought in 708 and then 630...
