I did a poll here back in October What Chicago sports team/s are you a fan of??

for those who cared to comment- The Bears were #1, Sox, Bulls, Cubs- I still think Cubs are more popular and some people were just mad the Cubs didn't win a game in the playoffs.

But, you know, I think alot of that cult-like following and out of Chicago fanbase the Cubs have is BECAUSE they are the "well, maybe next year" kinda team. I mean, house else can you account for it? That maybe and just the whole atmosphere of Wrigley and Wrigleyville. Maybe people get caught up watching the bleacher bums and the fans on the neighboring rooftops. I don't understand it really. I am a Cubs fan, but I grew up watching them, and Wrigley was like a busride away, so for me it's more of an upbringing or conditioning. As far as the nationwide status, who knows? The most famous underdogs is all I can say.

Yeah the Cubs are kind of like the Red Sox USED to be...

an obscure team that people liked because of the Shakespearian Tragedy-like history of their past.

The Cubs have the strongest fan base in Chicago - no doubt. The Bulls did for awhile until Jordan and Co. left town. But the Cubs fervor lives on - without any championships!!

I have not experienced football or baseball season In Chicago yet, but it seems I see more Bears clothing in people than any other team. The Cubs are big, and the Sox are right there as well.

But for winter sports, I'm a little disappointed. The Hawks pack the place with a knowlegable, albeit quiet (other than the anthem), crowd. But I've watched several road games in sports bars, and it seems rare that anyone else a watching. Yet the Bulls seem to have less interest yet -- only once when a Bulls game was on did even one person seem to be watching.

College basketball seems bigger, with people following their alma maters and meeting in pubs.

Not very popular and mostly ignored by our media, but it's there. I'm in Section 8, the Chicago Fire supporters group. We do our best to create an atmosphere inside the stadium by singing, jumping, waving flags, etc. We also bring groups to follow the club on the road. There are a handful of soccer bars in the city, including the Globe Pub (which has been voted best soccer bar in the States for a couple years in a row by USsoccer.com)

As for the question posed, it's the Bears and it's not really close.

Windy City Roller Girls = most popular IMO, Bob Regan is the best announcer in sports hands down.

This an EASY question to answer, the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers of course!........

NYC to me, is a "baseball town". It's hard to even find JETS or Giants sweatshirts in the sporting good stores in NYC. Places like Modells really don't even carry any of their stuff. Or a VERY small selection if they do. I couldn't even find a 'green' Jets shirts for St. Partrick's Day......

In Pittsburgh, finding that stuff is EASY! (Pittsburgh teams that is)

Yea, we have europeans who wake up at 7am on Saturday and head to bars to watch football (soccer) games. I know some hardcore fans, but they berate and belittle the US pro soccer league, I'm not sure why, maybe the quality of play doesn't stand up to the rest of the world? Dunno.
