Uh, HELLO, "economic CRISIS". If your sister moved here during the the BOOM of course she thinks you'll have "no problem". But jobs are MUCH TIGHTER NOW. I would really rethink how much a 'cushion' you have. If you can't get jobs to cover your rent are you can keep some "emergency money" sealed up for bus tickets back home?

This is the MOST SERIOUS ECONOMIC COLLAPSE in 70 years!!! That is LIFETIMES of people that have NEVER seen things so bad.

I would seriously consider STAYING PUT until / unless you have JOBS LINED UP.

You don't want to end up doing something illegal to keep a roof over your head.

Honestly a year or so ago I probably would have said "maybe save a bit more, but go for it" BUT NOW?!? It would be seriously irresponsible to not consider the very real possibility that you could be moving into Chicago when unemployment is at an ALL TIME PEAK and people are violently competing for any kind of work they can find.

Don't freak out by any means, 2000 - 3000 is a good start, but you may be disappointed by how quickly you can blow threw that in lakeview.

How far away from Chicago do you currently live (sorry if you said this in another post.) Do everything in your power so that at least one of you can find a job before you come up here.

I had a bit of a horror story before coming up here. I had been working for months to line up a job before finally moving up here. Once it was lined up, I had cancelled my current lease, hired a rental truck, cancelled utilities, etc. Well, three days before moving I was informed that my job fell through. After that, i went on a frantic search to find a job. Amazingly, luckily, and miraculously, I managed to find good paying part time work (20 hours a wk) and was able to fill in the other 20 hours once I got up here.

why would you not start applying to jobs now and possibly even land one before you move?

Check out Buena Park in Uptown, it is close to Lake View and Ravenswood, and I see postings on apartment buildings offering one bedrooms for 800-900 bucks all the time. *edit* definitely listen to the advice of finding a job before making any move out here as well. Even if you have 3000 bucks lined up, with first months rent, security deposit, cost to move out here, and then just the cost of living while you search for a job, the money will be gone before you know it, and that is even if you are watching every penny.

I know of more than a few one bedrooms in different areas of Lakeview between $750 and $850 and I know of plenty of studios well under $800 a month.

Just be careful. My husband and I moved here at the end of November (right after the wedding and finishing school) and we still can't find jobs. I never thought I'd go to college just to end up needing food stamps.

We definatly do not plan on moving without at least one of us having a job. I would not take a risk like that in a place like Chicago. Thanks for all the living suggestions. We definatly have a lot of searching around to do before this all happens and I am thinking we will need at least 5k before we move. At least if everything goes wrong I can always move in with my sister for a while if need be.

P.S Moving from Upper Michigan.
