Default What is the Chicago story that never gets told?

I'm a freelance journalist who may have the opportunity to do an in-depth piece on the city. I have quite a bit of freedom in choosing my subject, so I'm looking for ideas about people / or places that anyone thinks are timely but underreported.

Thanks!

You should write some epic and perfectly esoteric tale about the recent arrival of a family of destitute Lapplanders, replete with masterful prose painting vivid images of their plight evoking the entire range of human emotions from anger at the indifference they suffered to sadness for their losses to hope and redemption as they find peace, solace and relative prosperity in their modest 4-room Albany Park flat. Then they could publish it in the Chicago Reader, perhaps the most voluminous independent weekly in the continental United States, where, despite the sheer artistry and ingeniousness of your work, it will languish unnoticed because nobody could possibly read 10% of what they stuff into that freakin' paper.

I dont know if you've picked up a Reader later, but its pretty lean after the re-design last year. 80% of the bulk is ads.

....that they share with 4 sick reindeer they are nursing back to health. Suffering animals always get people choked up.

Default yess

yes. Add in an alluring woman that lives next door and owns the opposite and symmetrical unit in the buiding, whom out of individualistic though not greedy force of desire none of them can actually openly admit to wanting. Symbolizing hope in the affirming happiness of love and acceptance in a changing and romantic world. She needs to get killed off though for dramatic effect..
