First off-
Illegals is such an ugly term. I can only ask you refer to them as immigrants.
Yes, I know they break the law, but they don't do it in a Manson Family type of way, so let's not dehumanize them.
Language can pose problems, but it is not the problem.
Language is part of a culture. Let's be welcoming instead of frightening.
REALiTY--
Let's look not look so much at the little guy "buying" a home, but at the big guy "lending" the money.
The AMERICAN DREAM died when it was bought and sold.
And as for those struggling in poverty in such a rich (definition in this context: having an abundant supply of desirable qualities and resources) city-
Who is supplying the guns?
Who is selling the cars?
How can this even occur in the first place?!
Who round up all the poor people into housing projects?
Today--in whole neighborhoods?
Segregation and isolation from everyone.
How else are people supposed to act and react?
The lack of education and resources can hurt anyone.

There is a black president - yes I voted for him - stop with the excuses and blame game. The only one to blame for poverty are those that are not willing to work and endure to get out of it.
I grew up in a single family household with a mom making $25k a year. I worked my way through school and up the "ladder". Went to a crappy public school too. I am so sick of the excuses and blame game - study, work hard and persevere and you will succeed.
Minorities have so many more advantages to get an education it is sickening - a smart, hard working black man has a golden ticket to get through school and and up the corporate ladder. Problem is, none want to take advantage.
Oh - and the housing issues - 90% were caused by people buying homes they could never afford but chose to buy anyway. Shame on the banks but most people got what they deserved for buying something they could never afford. Yes, I have witnessed this first hand and it makes me sick seeing the people in my area losing homes they had no business buying in the first place - and I blame them 100%, not the banks - they all knew better but made poor decisions and will now blame oters rather than taking responsibility for their actions. Typical behavior - it is everyone's fault but mine. I bought a $700k house but make $70k a year, never read my mortgage or understood I bought a 1-year ARM - not my fault at all. Ridiculous - no accountability and most people are getting what they deserve.
Sorry for the rant.

That is simply untrue. Many people work very hard and barely get by. If EVERYBODY studied, worked hard and persevered everybody still couldn't succeed because the system doesn't supply that many good jobs.
That means that your success is only possible because others fail, thus making an opening for you. So it doesn't behoove you to resent those who fail since you can't succeed unless they fail.

It's the first truly liberal post on this topic, and people freak out. Yet you're upset that people take issue with your far-right antics? I don't see how you're any better.

Ancient history, as for Beverly, it had a very high mobility rate in the late 60's and 70's as Morgan Park High School experienced problems. Our neighbors moved out in droves, many were city employees with residency requirements who moved to the Bogan High School attendance area. That school, although relatively new, had established a reputation as being academically one of the best in the city, as well as a perception that it was a safe educational environment.

I tend to agree with Irishtom on this point. If all of the blacks and hispanics disappeared from Chicago tomorrow, someone would still have to work the minimum wage jobs. It's hard to predict exactly how this underclass group behave but I doubt it would be the genteel subculture of whites that some people imagine.

no excuses here.
and no need to apologize for anything.
I too have worked hard to be where I am. I'm going to school downtown.
And I also grew up in a single parent home and yes, we struggled too. I know the meaning of hard work.
But understand that one can work hard for a long time and get no where.
And there are those who don't and get further.
I understand all that. Life is that way.
I just don't understand how we can be one sided all the time.
And how quickly some call out a race and blame.
There's a world outside of our own and it doesn't hurt to be conscious of it.
Yes, there are some advantages to being a minority.
Do they all know about these advantages?
No, not all of them.
Those that do know, take advantage.
All I'm saying is that there is a lack of education and resources. Sometimes information does not make it into some of these neighborhoods.
And when I say education, I don't strictly mean schooling.
How can we truly say that these people people KNEW what they were getting into?
Anyone can be tricked into something they thought they could afford.
Yes, be responsible and read your contract. Yes, ask questions.
Just hope they give you the concrete truth and not just elements of the truth.
I also voted for Obama and yeah cool he made history because of him being black and all,
but that's not why I voted for him. I care more about where he came from, his upbringing, his ideals, and I can connect to him because of these things. To me, he seems sincere (but then again my cynicism for politicians lingers in the back of my mind) and I do believe he will do this country good.

I find it odd that you do not blame the banks. Given that the banks are as privy to the financial status to those they lend to as those accepting the loan, why do they not bear responsibility for making so many loans to those who could not repay?
If I give a bum a $100 loan today, I can only blame myself when my money disappears.

But clearly you AND the bum are to blame in this dubious transaction. And of course, you'd still give yourself a handsome year-end bonus, right?
