Obtaining a "No Parking Sign" while moving on a public street
I have a question for my extremely well-informed fellow Chicagoans about a parking situation. I searched the forum, and couldn't find exactly what I am looking for.
I am moving in a few weeks to a new apartment (Moving from Boystown to Wrigleyville), and I have seen around the neighborhood a few times that there will be a "No Parking on (Date Here) from (Time) to (Time)". I have seen these on public streets in order to help people move. (The last one I saw was a few months ago on Aldine).
Here is my question: how do you go about obtaining this/paying for this/ordering it? I am sure that there is a cost involved (we do live in Chicago, after all), and I figure I would need to go to my Alderman's office, but I am not sure of the exact procedure regarding it. I live on a one-way street off of a much busier street (Broadway) and I know it can be hell to squeeze a moving truck with two rows of parked cars onto the street. I am paying movers, so it's a large, 22 Foot Truck, and I will only need it for three hours max. My new place has a back alley that I will be able to unload, so parking there will not be an issue.
Anyone have experience obtaining these "No Parking" Orders? I might be crazy thinking regular people can get these, but something about seeing other people using them to move says it some sort of service I can pay for.
Thanks for the help guys - I can provide more info if necessary!

Easy. Call your Alderman's office. (Tunney?) It costs nothing. You have to request it a week or so in advance so they can notify the CPD. You have to put the signs up yourself after you pick them up from the Alderman's office.
Call Mr. Tunney's office.
Here you go-gift wrapped for you.

Thank you so much! I knew City Data would come through! I will be taking care of this well ahead of time, and will definitely appreciate having some room to park the big moving truck!
Thanks again!!!! You made my day!

I'm on Cornelia right now, so it's my current address...my next address is around 1100 W. Roscoe, so I think that's 44th (and I don't need a sign for my new place)....
Looks like I will have to make a trip to Uptown this week or next to deal with this!

I did the lawn chair thing when I moved last year on January 1st, but I didn't really have to as it was on a dead-end street.
When I was moving out we had some problems, but the car that was in our way saw us and came out and moved. =]
Saturday I'm moving in and have a garage I can pull into from the alley.
Now that I know we can do this, moving out/in will be much, much easier.

1100 W. Roscoe is in the 44th.
Here is Shiller's Web Site for the 46th:
Alderman Helen Shiller, 46th Ward - Home
Good luck with it all. Let us know how it works out.

Like everyone said, you need to go the the Alderman's office to get the sign and then put them up before hand. That's when the fun begins. This was a NIGHTMARE when we were moving from our apartment on Waveland near Broadway last summer.
We blocked off three spots, they were empty the night before, but that morning people parked in the middle spot and the front spot. We really just need the middle spot empty. As the alderman will tell you, there is nothing that THEY can do if someone is parked there. We called the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation as instructed. They say to call 311. They sent a cop about an hour later. Cop called to get permission for a tow truck, turns out they don't actually tow people for violating residential moving signs anymore. Cop is pissed and wants to call tow truck, but can't, he tells me to call 911, which I felt a little weird doing. Another hour later, we flag down a random cop passing by. He calls a tow truck. Tow truck doesn't show. More calls to Streets & Sani. Nothing. Cops have no record of tow truck dispatch. I get pissed and call 911. They send a car immediately. Finally, right before the No Parking is supposed to expire, a tow truck comes. He doesn't know who called him. Tows the middle car, we tell him the other car is fine, he insists on coming back to tow the other guy to, just on principle! Yaay!
My advice... get out there EARLY to see if people are in your spots. Call 911, not 311 and not streets and sani. That was the ONLY way I got any response. Try to get them to send a cop car, they seemed like the ones that actually gave a damn. If you have to block the entire street, then do it, it will at least get someone to notice.
If Chicago doesn't want 911 clogged with calls for parking issues, and if they don't want their streets to be blocked, they should spend more time responding to issues like this and less time writing tickets for meter violations. Good luck!!!
