If by "IT industry" the OP means a company that makes most of its money from computer software or hardware you will be hard pressed to find something like that in Chicago. There are lots of jobs in IT here, but the majority are as part of an IT Dept. inside a firm that really does not care too much about the technology. Means competition to "move up" is tremendously difficult -- might not be a good move depending on your ultimate career aspirations.
Well, when someone criticizes Chicago as much as you do, a little smiley emoticon seems meaningless.
I wonder if I went to the L.A. forum (or any other city's forum) and criticized their city like you do here with Chicago, I wonder if I'd be seen as "funny". I doubt it.

It all depends or arguments. If you just said "you are stupid" you would be ignored but if you try to argue your point supporting it with evidence, that's another story.

its pretty much like that everywhere. no company cares to have an IT dept. but they do cause its needed. I've work for firms as well as with .com but again it does depend on the profile of the company. Again would like to get into someone else but not to sure what just yet.
I do agree that I should visit the area before making the final move. I will have to try to set something up I guess. Would be nice if I knew someone there as that would make it easy.
Having lived in Escondido, CA for a while, do yourself this favor, COME HERE like NOW, not July when everything is all happy, cheery, go lucky. Come here, look at the filty streets and cars, look at how everyone is all pasty white unless they fake and bake, drive our roads during the day in our traffic, deal with the people (who CA people tend to feel we all have sticks up our butts due to everyone being so blazay, robotic, or frustrated and ready to kill eachother so to say, probably from lack of sunlight), deal with doing pretty much everything indoors (of which CA people cannot even comprehend having to do things like play basketball, soccer, run, swim, etc all at indoor gyms), deal with sitting on/in OLD mass transit, and deal with everything being VERY old as the city itself is very old unlike much of southern CAL where everything is new, bright, and cheery looking. If you can handle all this, not to mention waking up day after day to gray skies, no birds singing (unless you count the pigeons), no greenery for 6 months out of the year unless once again its potted plants that are inside, then you can handle living here. Life here.... Doesn't it look fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0oDi...eature=related
Chicago is unique in that there are so many neighborhoods with different character, you're sure to find a spot you love.
My advice is to take some time to visit and check out a VARIETY of neighborhoods before you move/sign a lease. Read about different areas on these boards and spend some time hanging out in each one. When I moved from the suburbs to Chicago, I made the mistake of just trusting that I would love Lakeview (since it's where so many people recommend), and I couldn't stand it! So, just take time to really investigate.
The winters are harsh, but I've known so many people that have moved from warmer climates and still love it! Like the rest of us, they find the beautiful warmer months make up for the cold.
