I think when compared to other metropolitan giants Chicago is not a bad place to live. There is planty to do besides bar hop. Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the two oldest zoological parks in the nation. The other is Miller Park in Bloomington, Il. Shedd Aquarium, Chinatown, Museums, Bears, Cubs and White Sox, Lake Michigan, Navy Pier, festivals, skyscrapers, etc.. If you don't find it, "it" will find you. It's the town that Billy Sunday could not shut down. It's my kinda town.
To bring humor to a bunch of dark and brooding bankers in their fifties that destroy our economy and then have the nerve to stick their hands out for a bailout...

Please check out the first posting under "Chicago" titled "Read this first" as it has excellent info. that may be useful.
I would caution that "lots of Asian folks" is relative. Certainly lots more than any city in the Midwest on a per-capita basis except maybe Appleton and other places in NE Wisconsin. But it's nothing like coastal California. Asian culture is not a novelty here or anything, but much less prominent and has much less influence on the culture at large than it does in coastal Cali.

Wausau, WI has to be close to the highest per capita... It's 10.6% Asian (nearly all Hmong). Appleton is still only 3 or 4% Asian (and still mostly Hmong).
Having lived in Escondido, CA for a while, do yourself this favor, COME HERE like NOW, not July when everything is all happy, cheery, go lucky. Come here, look at the filty streets and cars, look at how everyone is all pasty white unless they fake and bake, drive our roads during the day in our traffic, deal with the people (who CA people tend to feel we all have sticks up our butts due to everyone being so blazay, robotic, or frustrated and ready to kill eachother so to say, probably from lack of sunlight), deal with doing pretty much everything indoors (of which CA people cannot even comprehend having to do things like play basketball, soccer, run, swim, etc all at indoor gyms), deal with sitting on/in OLD mass transit, and deal with everything being VERY old as the city itself is very old unlike much of southern CAL where everything is new, bright, and cheery looking. If you can handle all this, not to mention waking up day after day to gray skies, no birds singing (unless you count the pigeons), no greenery for 6 months out of the year unless once again its potted plants that are inside, then you can handle living here. Life here.... Doesn't it look fun. YouTube - global warming with bill murray
Sunshine? And everthing looking new? Is that what it takes to be happy? If that was the case, EVERYBODY should just move to a Phoenix suburb. How boring is that? Same weather day in and day out. Don't even get to change the wardrobe up.
That's what you need to do. Do not ask the locals as they will always encourage you to move. Check it out yourself and especially the areas that you are planning to move to and can afford. Good luck!
I guess he should ask a guy who's from NYC instead? Who by the way is COMPLETELY miserable in Chicago, but don't have the guts for some reason to move back to the so-called 'oasis' that is called NYC.
Seriously now, check out Chicago in the winter and not in the summer. Winter Chicago is a totally different city than summer Chicago.
And anybody who thinks NYC ain't cold in the winter, has NEVER spent one there! Unlike NYC, Chicago summers are WAY more comfortable. NYC feels like a jungle during the summer (not a concrete one either)!
I Love chicago, yes the winter is not that great but as long as ur not [mod cut] like advocatudiavoli..you should be fine... [mod cut] . Oh and summer time Chicago makes up for the winter.
The city is awesome if you're single...soo much nightlife. Tons of bars and clubs. You'll never get bored.
