Chicago graffiti (felony, neighborhoods, quality of life)

is it me or chicago doesnt have as much graffiti as other big cities such as la or ny (not saying its a bad thing) but why do you think there is such a big difference between those cities, i know we have gang graffiti but in certain areas they have toned it down because they dont want police etc to know they are there but it seems like compared to other cities we are relatively low, why do you think that is

Yeah, the city will come out and remove graffiti for free from anything. Even if you don't call, the crews roam the city looking for things to clean. Some neighborhoods get more treatment than others, but on the north side graffiti barely has a chance.

That is what initially impressed me about the city. Being from a small southern town, the only city I had ever been to was New Orleans. Between my time in New Orleans and the stereotypes southerners have of big cities, I didn't know what to think before visiting Chicago.

I was really surprised by how clean everything was compared to my preconceptions.

Gang graffitti has dropped, but only partially due to the cleaning efforts. As ChiMack notes, a lot of gangs don't want the attention that tagging up an area brings. Twenty years ago, you could easily tell who held what turf by the tags (and, of course, so could the cops). Increased police attention on quality of life issues (like graffitti) cut down on the overt displays of gang affiliation. Another factor is the difficulty of getting spray paint in the city. Most hardware stores won't (or can't--I'm not sure if it is officially banned) sell spray paint. It's a lot more difficult to tag a wall with a bucket of Dutch Boy and a roller....

Graffity used to be big in the city of chicago ....just like new york ,then it moved on to other cities like L.A vegas etc..... Graffity artist came from new york back in the day and made the city of chicago its second largest city of graffity .Now and days you dont see it as much cause the city has no tolerance at all and it comes down ....not to mention the laws are different from other cities now .....you used to get away with alot but chicago is one city that has some harsh laws ...its a felony if you get caught here in chicago ...

Yeah grafitti gets taken down but I've noticed that there are places where it stays up quite a while like next to Metra tracks and that big abandoned grain elevator next to the I&M Canal near Damen. Why is that?
