She hated going up there, because idiots standing on the corner would make catcalls, and whistle at her when she walked from the train staion to her boyfriend's.

I have noticed Bryn Mawr is now very cleaned up over by the Red Line station. I will be going to Francesca's on Bryn Mawr this Saturday.
Bryn Mawr has improved drastically even since I moved to Uptown in 2005. And they finally finished the environmental cleanup on that strip of vacant buildings just east of the "L" on the north side of the street. For a while there were plans for a Nookies to open up there, but I'm not sure if that's still in the cards.

The Wintrhop Kenmore corridor has seen a lot of condo conversions in recent years, but it's still got it's share of gang and crime trouble. To me this was always a weakness of Edgewater--that the worst part of the neighborhood basically surrounded the "L"... But now instead of a continuous corridor of trouble, it's broken up into little patches of trouble.

Furthermore I would not recommend any female to jog at 5 am in the dark in 90% of the neighborhoods of Chicago. I would especially avoid high transient traffic areas and areas that have many 4 am bars (and that includes Lake View and Lincoln Park for future reference)...

Heck, the corner of Bryn Mawr and Winthrop had a very active drug operation running on it until just a few years ago when the cops cleaned it out.

None of the three mixed-income neighborhoods on the far north Lakefront--including Uptown, Edgewater, and Rogers Park--are horrible neighborhoods. But they all have more crime than their neighbors to the south, and Edgewater is only marginally better than the other two.
I don't know "jack $hit about $hit" ? I lived there, I know EXACTLY what I'm talking about! Well, I do know that ALOT of the so-called 'city' residents in Chicago, are what I'd consider 'soft'.

You're in Chicago, NOT Mayberry! "Marginally better"? Why don't ALL you people who are so SCARED of the big bad city just move way out into the burbs? You want and expect Chicago streets, to be some sterile and 100% safe place. I got news for you, it ain't going to happen!

And PLEASE don't try comparing Edgewater with Uptown. All the scumbags and homeless that loaf around Truman college, or on Sheridan. Edgewater is night and day even though they ain't far apart. I lived in the Uptown area before. It's made some headway, but is still loaded with scumbags. Between the SRO's and soup kitchens, I doubt it'll EVER come close to being an Edgewater!

You know that 4 am bar Gamekeepers in Lincoln Park? My wife and her friends used to call it "Rapekeepers" because it always seemed to be tied up in some Lincoln Park newsworthy rape story. Busy streets are your friend!

Did you live in the Kenmore-Winthrop corridor?

You'd probably say the same thing about the 'streets' of Mayberry.

Shaddup. Edgewater was part of Uptown until the 1970s. Take away the sort of rotten heart of central Uptown, and you've got a neighborhood that closely resembles Edgewater sans Sheridan Road high-rises--and probably has less crime. I don't care where you lived. Clearly you didn't pick up any sort of perspective on the neighborhood.

I don't think Edgewater is a bad neighborhood by any means and I would have no problem living there myself. Most of Edgewater is relatively safe and nice. But it's misleading to say that no part of Edgewater is sketchy. More than misleading, it's just wrong.

I edited my post right before you posted this. (I left out a word.) I can see how without that word you would be thrown off. By traffic I meant of all kinds-not just vehicular and especially not vehicular.

Yeah "busy streets" are usually your friend, but side streets and less traveled "busy" streets late at night in highly transient areas are not.
