Looks like the Dominicks is on Lincoln and Foster. I am not sure the quality of that one. I love mine on Clybourn but others experiences tend to vary from meh to not with a ten foot pole.

I only go to Devon to eat dinner and shop for middle eastern groceries. You can check the crime stats on everyblock.com

Well those "couple of bums" are a pretty consistent source of problems. Then there's Gill Park and a couple of problem buildings on Cuyler near the Broadway end unless they've cleaned up recently.

It is crappola. It has been bad since the mid 90's.

The best Jewel choice for the Lincoln Square community is in the North Center community at:

4250 N. Lincoln Ave
Chicago, IL 60618
(773) 472-6171

another good one (but a bit farther) is at:

4042 W. Foster Ave
Chicago, IL 60630
(773) 583-8080

You must not be looking hard enough or have unrealistic standards for $800 a month for a 1br in Lincoln Square.

I have found a handful. Right now the best options seem to be a few places in the West Rogers Park area, and a few around the Lincoln Sq. area. Next seems to be the Ravenswood area. So, I have a number of options close to the brown line, and a few that are a bus ride from the red line, or near the red line but a bus and train line away from where we need to go on Devon.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Please be sure to post any others that you might have. The comment on the grocery store was helpful. I will try to make sure we have easy access to it. I was not aware that some of the chain grocery stores were not very good. I am used to if one is good, then all are good (at least in the areas of Cleveland and Houston that I have lived). Seems Jewel is more consistent than Dominicks.

On that note, if there are any further suggestions for a good Jewel or Dominicks to go to in the areas of West Rogers Park, Ravenswood, Lincoln Sq., or Andersonville, please mention them.

Thanks.

Also keep in mind that there are Whole Foods Markets and Trader Joes scattered throughout the city. Often the Jewel, Dominicks and Aldi (well, always Aldi) within proximity will be gross so it is nice to have those other chain options available to you. There is a really good local produce market in Edgewater (or thereabouts) as well. Farmer's markets are also plentiful and run from May-October.

There's a Jewel on Lincoln just north of Berteau (between Irving Park and Montrose). I'd say that area is definitely safe and there are tons of nice restaurants along Lincoln Ave. You may be able to find a cheaper apartment if you look closer to the Montrose or Irving Park brown line stop a little farther south of the center of Lincoln Square but still close to the Jewel (there's also a Trader Joe's a little south of Irving Park on Lincoln). A friend of mine has a pretty nice vintage 2BR/1BA place around there for about 1,000 I think. I really like that area, but the ride on the brown line from Irving Park to the Loop will take at least 45 min.

My concern with West Rogers Park is that it's not convenient to a rail line. You'd have to rely on a bus to scoot you over to the Red Line and that could add up to 20 minutes to an already lengthy commute. Given your expressed criterion to be near a CTA line, I'd definitely go with Lincoln Square over WRP.
