As much as I love this city, my long term goal is to move west, especially because of the weather, but I don't think it is so miserable as a whole.
Any comment?
Doesn't surprise me in the least. The weather here for such a large US city is very poor quality. Yes it may be sunny today for instance, but winds are howling about 40 miles an hour, and its 35 degrees. How delightful! pfft Springs are a joke thanks to Lake Michigan with continual clouds and temps hovering between 35F - maybe 55F at best with a few teaser days thrown in here and there where it goes above 70F, summers and falls are ok, but tend to be rather short. Roads around here are by far among the worst in the country I've ever driven on; completely loaded with potholes and so outdated that they were barely able to handle the traffic of the 1970s much less the traffic of today. Taxes are terrible here, and jobs pay mediocre to slightly above average at best. I'm not even going to go there when it comes to our CTA. Now that is a complete joke. Then theres Chicago's wonderous school system. YIKES! Kinda reminds me of the movie High School High. Looks like a Chicago high school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WNlL...eature=related
Our plusses here maybe I would say is the food and yes we do have nice summers with plenty to do, but overall the rest of the year here is not very pleasing... Especially about Jan-April 10th.
Heres some of the wonderful he haw times we get to have around here (including the burbs over in IN). And note that even with all the raised taxes, the city cries broke right away and supposedly doesn't have money for salt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_ZiA3VOUrs
And this is the city that wants to host the world's Olympics? LOL! HA! Yes sir this is what we want representing the United States! Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the area for the Olympics : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y85yATeXthM (Yes sir definitley the garden spot of the US!) LOL
Things like commute, crime, corruption, and weather do not imnpact all people living within an area the same. For instance, some parts of Chicagoland are perfectly safe while other areas are practically ininhabitable. Likewise, some people have very long commutes that consume 3 or 4 hours of theri time each day while other people live very near where they work. Also, some people work outdoors are are directly impacted by the weather while others work in a comfortable setting or even at home. Things like corruption and taxes also impact people differently in a metro area as large and diverse as Chicago. I agree wholeheartedly with some of the other posts indicating that, in most circumstances, there are more "miserable" places to live than Chicago. My list would starrt with East St. Louis and Gary. Many people actually want to move to Chicago for a variety of reasons. How many people do you know who aspire to live, work, and raise a family in East St. Louis?

People keep talking about the weather. The weather is bad all over the region. How does that make Chicago, specifically, a bad place to live?
I think Chicago really does have its miserable points.
Ever get stuck in one-track on the blue line subway with stomach flu? Yuck.
But, honestly, I think that Chicago's "miserable" points really do make the city as wonderful as it is. I would also have to say that the listed reasons for Chicago's number 3 spot are kind of ridiculous and vague. Go to any other city during rush hour and tell me how your commute was.
The bottom line is that, if you're poor, living in ANY city is miserable and if you are wealthy, life can be pretty good even in "miserable" cities. I am speaking in generalities here, but I don't that most of the people living up on the north shore in places like Highland Park, Lake Forest, or Winnetka feel too miserable about their living environment. Otherwise, they wouldn't pay millions to live there.
