4000sq ft isnt small but it isnt really very big either. But I live Texas and 4000sq foot home doesnt come close to being considered a mansion. Its almost kind of average for a home - well thats not really true- 3000sq ft is more average but none the less these are some fantastic photos. You learn something every day!
Many of these houses are significantly bigger than 4000 sq ft. Some look like they're on extra wide or double lots.

yeah I noticed that. I was curious as to why do some of them look like 2 different homes?
Were they added on to later on because the styles are very different

When you post the pics from the Northside make a new thread! I will add my Northside pics in that one. Or if you want, I will make the thread and you can add your pics to it.
might as well make your thread. So I know which mansions not to take pictures of.

Thats because Chicago is a dense city and little space between the houses. If Chicago had a much lower density, you will see more typical suburban style mansions.

Some of those pictures are showing two different houses. A lot of the houses in those neighborhoods are row houses, meaning they are built side-by-side with no separation in between. Most northern cities with housing stock from the late 1800s have lots of row houses.

I don't think I would call all of those houses "mansions". Some are just pretty standard Chicago greystone two-flats with some nicer ornamentation or a mansard roof. But the pics are really great, and I thank Avengerfire and the others for posting them. Great thread! We need more picture threads to show off Chicago neighborhoods. I think it's helpful for people who don't live here, but want to get an idea of how different neighborhoods look. I may start a Buena Park/Uptown picture thread this spring...

There are some fantastic residential examples of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture in this town, esp. on the south side.

Well, when you compare these homes to what most other people of the day were living in, they are undoubtedly extravagant by comparison.

I think people have had their vision of "big" warped by today's supersized McMansions.

Actually all are mansions. The ones that look like two and three flats rowhouses are twice as long as two and three flats in other parts of the city. Many of the houses I took pics of have coach houses on the rear of the property still. I just did not take pics from all angles this time...

Also, there is only one front entrance to these buildings that may appear to be old apartment buildings or old condos. The stairs to the other floors are inside the first floor. (No hallway right inside the front door as found in buildings built originally to have separate residences on each floor.)
