I am in Oak forest and I woke at 4:34 am. I couldnt figure out why I suddenly jumped out of bed. I was surprised to hear we had a earthquake. I am even more surprised we felt it all the way up here.

I just wanted to say that I felt the tremor too.....it woke me up last night. I used to live in Costa Rica where we would have tremors all the time. I know what I felt. Kinda crazy...I just moved here and did idea of tremors didn't even cross my mind.

I don't live in Chicago but I live like 2hrs away in Kalamazoo, I was a like 45 mins away from the Illinois boarder in Michigan and we felt a slight little shake in our car. Crazy.
I hope Chicago doesn't experience a Earth Quake.

on topic - i'm wondering if my parents felt it in Tenn, because they kept saying that it was even felt in Marietta, GA.

One of the things they were saying is it really depends on what kind of house you live in.
People in brick or stone buildings and people on high floors would feel it far more strongly. It woke me up, but not even enough to know what it was until i heard it on the news, but I am on the ground floor of a wood frame apartment complex, so that's no surprise.

Its only a matter of time before the New Madrid cranks out another big one. A couple hundred years ago when the area was much less populated, it still caused an incredible amount of damage (caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards, ruptured sidewalks as far away as Boston and DC, was felt over 1 million square miles compared to 6,000 sq miles for the San Fran 1906 quake, etc). When it does strike we're in for a world of hurt.

My office is in an old steel highrise from the early 20th century, so I hope the "big one" doesn't hit while I'm here. This building shakes in the wind, so I can't imagine what a real earthquake would be like.

You're still better off in steel than in brick. If the big one hit, all those walk-ups would be decimated.
St. Louis is beyond screwed, and everyone knows it; we're just hoping it magically never happens. When I was a kid some geologist said it was def. coming, and it got wide-spread media play. My mom puts blankets, water and spaghetti O's in her van, in case... well I don't know, it really doesn't make much sense

I happened to be lying awake in bed when it hit. I thought maybe the folks upstairs were having a late-night love making session. Walls shook a little and some vibration in the A/C plenum.
BTW, you can report your earthquake responses to USGS here.
