DC suburbinite here;
Simply it's due to NY being the ORIGINAL juggernaut in pop culture, LA being the modern flashy primadonna of american cities.
Chicago has as much character as LA or NY has, a different one but as much none the less.
It also has contributed to a TON of americana and world trends like jazz, economics and architecture, improv theatre and house music (according to wiki).
It is probably the capital of the great lakes rust belt due to it's metoric rise during the Industrial Revolution (first or second I can't remember) and it's still number one today.
All though more controversial, it's oft storied political sagas are important too. Don't forget their pizza and baseball base too.
Chicago is permenantly etched in the Big 3 of American cities, oh sure places like Houston and Phoenix are getting up there in numbers but in terms of history and cultural (not to mention economic) signifigance it's hard to beat the City of Broad Shoulders.
Remember, you's guy's metro area is the only non sunbelt one that's having fairly healthy growth, so what ever yous guys are doing keep it up!
(Plus if you wanna be churlish, remember no one really cared that much about LA till the 20s-30s).

Mainly because they say Chicago is not important. If you have a advanced understanding of the stock market you would know that futures and options (only sell in chicago) are crucial, because they help you hedge against rough times (right now). Without the ability to hedge the stock market would be incredibly low we are talking 500 for the s&p because no one would buy stocks. So without chicago wall street doesnt work to well, but some people will never understand that

So without Indianapolis...racing wouldn't be too popular...without Houston..the space program might not exist...without Detroit cars might not exist...if Omaha closed down, there'd be very little telemarketing.
anyways, I've proven again, it's simply not hard to make you guys look ridiculous.

No, what's really ridiculous is some little troll from Cowtown, Iowa trying to make himself look cool by downing Chicago by incessantly comparing it to New York and L.A., while not really knowing anything about any of them. Maybe we'll ask your advice about the farm report.

I've lived in Chicago and Miami before. Right now, in Des Moines...yes. Maybe I should ask you the farm report, as you are probably not much farther from the nearest farm as I am. Just go straight north 20 minutes (maybe not even that far since you're close to Lake County already being on the north side) and you'll see farms start popping up halfway through Lake County, lol.

What in gods name are you blabbering about. No racing if indy wasnt around, omaha and telemarketing. We are talking about the STOCK MARKET without the stock market nobody has any money to do any of your above mentioned tasks. You really dont understand the stock market and how it affects the entire world. But you come up with OMAHA? dear god

The point is every city has its particular niche.
I don't follow racing so I'm not sure whats bigger, daytona or indianpolis, I do know that Houston is referred to as "Space City".
