To sum it up, swimming in the lake is not bad. You will be just fine. Sometimes over the summer, especially after rains, some of the beaches might be closed for a day or two. But that shows that they are very well monitored on a daily basis. The beaches are very fine and nothing to be worried of. Oak Street is a nice beach, North Avenue is where everything is going on - a lot of beach volleyball, restaurant, bar.

I especially love it when all the dead fish wash up on shore. Lol, truthfully I love going to the beach in Chicago except that the water is usually freezing, even in the summer. I think the fact that we are such a large city right next to a beach really separates us from some of the other large cities.

The beaches are something that really does set apart Chicago from other cities. The water can be cold, but on a nice day, lay in the sun for a little, play some beach volleyball, and the water feels a lot nicer!

I don't really have any specifics in mind when I say this, but I still kind of feel like Chicago should do more to really use the beaches to it's advantage. They are nice, but they could do more with them.

Yes, I mean how many Midwest/inland towns can boast that? I'll have to take a dip if I go to Chicago - provided I go in summer!

I recall swimming in Lake Michigan to be very cold with lots of dead fish washed up on the sand (Montrose Beach) and very toxic (Zion Beach) but that was years ago. It can get pretty cold though.

Well, I have only been to North Avenue beach and Oak Street beach. Those are probably the most "touristy" being as they are downtown and have a lot of stuff going on there usually, so they keep them pretty darn clean. The lake water can be cold from time to time, but it's summer - the cold water should feel good.

50 degree water temp does not feel so good in June/July if the air temp is below 85 (which it usually is.)

The best swimming days are in August and September. The water temp is much warmer and there is less of a difference between it and the air temp.

I would NEVER go in it, all those chemicals and the closed beached report in the mornings, too scary.

This is a good look at what the beaches here look like after a storm has washed some of what is in the lake up on the land.
YouTube - The Polluted Bradford Beach - June 10, 2008. Gotta love the part about a few dead bodies being washed up. LOL!
