water temps at Montose beach today were 71 degrees. That's pretty warm for this time of the year. This past week I was at both Foster Beach and Osterman beach, and was able to hang out in the water for a while.

I can definitely say that the water is warmer on the Michigan side at this time of the year. Even back on Memorial day, the water in Holland was really, really nice.

Swimming in fresh water is very different than In salt water. I can't stay in salt water for long I am not a huge fan of the taste of salt. Ugh. Lake bottoms can be sandy, rocky or mucky so that can be gross. Pools whether your in Chicago , Florida or where ever is the way to go

The south shore buoy hit 75 yesterday...near shore beach temps fluctuate with upwells but range from the low 70s to near 80. The historical high point for lake temps isn't until late August and we're already running anomalously warm.

Riptide currents have been a big problem in the Great Lakes, a good number of swimmers have panicked and drowned. Dave Benjamin and Jerry Davich had a radio show discussing this on Lakeshore Public Radio a couple days ago.

Not many beaches are lifeguarded.

On a more positive note, you should try surfing in the lake if you're daring enough.
Check out Third Coast Surf Shop in New Buffalo, Michigan... about an hour from Chicago.

The Chicago beaches have lifeguards. We were at Loyola Park beach on Fathers' Day and there were several lifeguards very actively patrolling the beach, as in not allowing swimmers to go very far from shore, etc. There was a guard up on a guard station and 1 in a rowboat and a couple walking up and down the beach.

Chemical waste??? Polution? well maybe down by Chicago, but up here in Michigan Lake Michigan always appears to be very clean. (I Know there is some polution in all water) I never see large amounts of trash or garbage, never see dead fish en-mass, no needles or medical waste. It seems Chicago has more problems with this at the bottom of the lake, where they are doing thier polution. We also would like to thank them for the asian carp they let in from the Chicago river. Lake Michgian beaches are some of the most pristine beaches in the country, although the water is cold most of the time. The great lakes are as clean as they have been in years, even lake erie which at one time had a huge problem with polution is much much nicer now.

That always reminds me of George Carlin's "swimming in raw sewage" skit.

The best beaches ive ever been to are in Hawai'i, naturally. Theyre the best in the world IMO, and im sure when I get to the Mediterranean it would at least tie.

Florida beaches are alright, but I dont care for Florida itself.

Jersey is.... Jersey. Ive lived there, and im an NYer, so theres natural bias there. Jersey aint that great.

NYC? Yeah, no.

California? Waters way too ****ing cold.

Swimming in Lake Michigan is like swimming at an ocean. Only the water isn't salty so you don't have to wash your hair afterwards.
