Yes, it is right next to UIC across 290.
Well the modern boundaries of Greektown are Van Buren (or 290 if you prefer) to the South, Madison to the North, 90/94 to the east to about Racine on the west.

It is an expressway. There are bridges over it. Nothing scary about it.

Well for one University Village is closer to some rough areas and has rough areas itself. Greektown is hemmed in pretty good. Greektown is also the closest to the Engineering building.
Greektown is closer to downtown and has much more night life than University Village as well.

I live in University Village, just south of UIC at 15th and Morgan, and the engineering building (ERF) is 4-5 blocks from where I live. The rec center (SRF) is another two or three past it.
That is a short walk in Chicago, but I would still take my bike. Or my scooter, if the parking's cheap and the weather's nice.
Now repeat after me: two legs, two wheels.....two legs, two wheels....two legs, two wheels.....two legs, two wheels......
Repeat that a couple thousand times, throw in a CTA pass for when the weather's bad, and you're well on the road to figuring out how to survive in this place while keeping some semblance of your sanity.

Besides the many greek restaurants Greektownisn't really that much more exicting than University Village. there's a couple of bars, but you have some in University Village as well. In terms of nightlife Taylor street is king around UIC.
And to me Greektown is basically just the strip of Halsted, so it doesn't really stretch anywhere to the west or east.
