I'm talking about the "Little Italy" strip of Taylor between Halsted and Medical Disctrict. I think I wrote the same thing about Taylor Street in your original thread about choosing a neighborhood near UIC.
The boundaries of the hoods are to some extent always matter of opinion, especially for rather small overlapping ones like around UIC.

The recommendation of Greektown is a good one, but not for the stated reasons. Greektown has far more of an edge than University Village, due largely to the flophouse on Jackson and the 24-hour gyros joints which tend to draw a fair number of homeless people and low-lifes. That said, it is not a bad or dangerous area by any means.

Greektown and University Village are about as different as two places can be.

UV is a quiet, new urbanist neighborhood that is joined at the hip to a university. LOTs of college kids around. Laid out very much as an extension of the UIC campus, its primary focal point is the UIC athletic fields. Lots of green space, and cutesy mini downtown at Maxwell/Halsted with open air tables in the summer. Think little kids playing soccer in the summer, college kids playing rugby in the fall.

GT is a former warehouse/now loft district, part of the West Loop, and as such, much more an extension of the Loop. It is dense, urban, and somewhat gritty. Very little green space. No real connection to the UIC campus other than geographic proximity. GREAT restaurants. Lots of Loop/professional workers live there and love to brag to their co-workers about how short their commutes are.

What Greektown has over University Village is transportation. It gives you the Blue Line at your door, as well as close proximity to Union Station and the Northwestern Station. The expressways are right there. You can literally walk to the Loop. Logistically, Greektown is as good as it gets, plus, as an added bonus, it is immediately north of UIC.

UV has good public transit access to the Loop, and it also has the expressways. But outside of rush hour, public transit options are limited to the Halsted and Blue Island buses. You definitely need a car there, and a bicycle makes things a LOT easier. Not because of the traffic (that is only really a problem on the North Side), but because of the PARKING.

You don't need a car in GT, and parking is a major pain around there. You definitely need a car in UV, and because it is a necessity you must insist on getting parking with your unit.

There is one intermediate zone, however: a development called University Commons, which is the former South Water produce market converted loft condos, located in University Village. So if you want the loft lifestyle in Mr. Rogers neighborhood, you can even get that.

Thank you

Well from what you described I would prefer living in University Village- except the problem being that we do not plan on bringing our cars. So that sucks.

Does University Commons have better access to transportation? That sounds like a dorm or something. Its not a dorm is it?

What the heck is a Flop House?

Taylor Street is the formerly Italian neighborhood running west from the UIC campus down Taylor Street to Ashland.

Tri Taylor is another formerly Italian neighborhood that runs along Taylor Street from Damen to Western.

University Village is the area that straddles the UIC athletic fields, south of the East Campus up to the railroad tracks.

Pilsen is the neighborhood just south of University Village on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Greektown is part of the West Loop, which is a former warhouse district just to the north of UIC.

Now do you get it?

UIC is bordered by Taylor Street to the West, University Village/Pilsen to the south, and Greektown/West Loop to the North. To the east lies a still-active no-name warehouse district up to the Chicago River, with the South Loop on the other side of the river.

Ukranian Village is part of another neighborhood called West Town, which is nowhere near the UIC campus and would almost certainly involve an automobile commute. I'm not sure why anyone would recommend that to someone coming to Chicago to attend UIC, but it is certainly doable if you prefer to drive.

During rush hour (and on weekends during the day), you have 4 ways to get downtown from University Village:

1. The 18th St bus to the Red Line.
2. The Roosevelt Road bus to the Red Line.
3. The Blue Island bus to the loop.
4. The Halsted bus to the Blue Line.

In the middle of the night, the 18th Street bus stops running and you do not want to take the Roosevelt bus. that leaves two ways, which means you are limited to getting to and from the Loop on the Blue Island or to the North Side via the Halsted bus and its connection to the blue Line. Its doable, but a pain, which is why everyone drives (or bikes) on weekends.

Which is also why ditching your car is a mistake, IMO, in Chicago. And I say that as someone who hates automobiles and prides himself on how few miles he puts on his. Trust me: you need a car in Chicago, so you can go grocery shopping in the rain, and come home ****faced from the clubs at 5:30 AM.

No, Univeristy Commons is not a dorm. It is a fancy-pants loft development in University Village. It is mostly yuppies, with a few UIC professors and even a few UIC students - affluent ones whose parents either buy the condos as an investment or are willing to pay for a nice place for their kids to live. Since it is in University Village, the transit options are no different.

Great thanks for all the clarification

My husbands company is going to give him a Zip Car account. I believe it has a montly limit but it might just be enough.

I dont get wasted so that wont be an issue and my days of staying out to 5:30 are long behind me. Not that I wouldnt want to stay out that late especially if I was having fun but my body says otherwise. Anyways I suppose we could cab it. How much is a cab to downtown from University Village. I am going to look at Walk website to see what kinds of stores are around me. A good grocery store is a must for me because I love to cook often. I think UV sounds like a better fit for us because we live a pretty active lifestyle.

There is also the Metra stop at 16th & Halsted, although you have to plan ahead for that one as it only stops there 5 or 6 times a day.
