T-Shirts, Protesting should prevent the detention
Back in 1992 or so, they had t-shirts that said, "Hi, I'm Bart Simpson, Who the Hell are You." Students were sent home or had to replace such shirts.
In 1994 or so, my brother had a shirt that said, "GodDamnit isn't a word" with Jesus meaning and he was able to wear this shirt multiple times without any problems.
In the early 1990s, Big Johnson and Co-Ed Naked t-shirts were popular and it took school administrators 2-3 years to figure out what they meant before they were banned.
Cursing would get you a detention, regardless of it was political or not. I believe this is still the case, though it may not be as enforced as it once was.
I am sure if the OP would threaten to sue the detention would be dropped unless the principal is an idiot.
Just be glad you attend some freak school like Bob Jones University where you used to be banned from cursing and wearing pants if you were female (along with interracial dating until 2000, when Bush gave a speech there). But, because it is a private school, my understanding is they can pretty much have whatever rules they want.
Regardless of public or private funding, I believe primary and secondary schools should continue to ban cursing, regardless of free speach or not. I believe cursing is mostly disrespectful and should be discouraged. That is my opinion.

I am a middle school teacher and I do not condone cursing of any kind in my classroom. While I may not give detention the first time around, I do not have anything against the teacher who did. Cursing, whether it is about the President or when talking about someone's parents, is still cursing and has no place in a classroom. Does it happen? Of course. Should students be respectful enough to use proper language in a classroom? They better.

Totally agree. We've already loosened up the rules of society to a point that respect is completely absent in today's schools.

I (GASP) agree with Drover
You cursed in school. Period. You got detention. So what? Did you get expelled? Then, you would have a right to be heard. Otherwise, suck it up and serve detention. Again, next time expand the vocab to effectively get your opinion across.
There have been numerous Supreme Court cases regarding right to protest, freedom of speech in schools, etc. First, no one in their right mind would sue over this and no lawyer in their right mind would take the case. What are you suing for? Cursing and getting in trouble? It's school, there are rules you have to follow. Sorry.

But no, there is a double standard supported by a left wing conspiracy. People bad mouthed H.W. when I was at school and it hurt my feelings. [/sarcasm]
EDIT: spose I'll say something constructive. If the detention was explicitly for making comments about the president then you would have something here. Whether that is true or not is completely unknown since we do not have any evidence of the teacher's motive.

I mentioned Bethel v. Fraser, but a few others:
Tinker v. Des Moines
Morse v. Frederick (bong hits 4 jesus)
Papish v. Board of Curators, U of Mizzou
Hazelwood School Dist. v. Kuhlmeier.
Now, Papish and Hazelwood are more about freedom of the press in schools, but the idea remains the same.

You can get out of it if you really want to
While I do not condone cursing, you can get out of it if you threaten to sue.
A good friend of mine growing up had a beef with the assistant principal and the assistant principal ordered a search of his school locker. The kid had nothing to hide but being a cocky kid with money called his dad who called their lawyer who called the school. The locker was never searched. After that, the assistant principal would not even look in the direction of that kid.
Money talks folks. The school if pushed hard enough will drop this sort of case. The OP just has to decide if it is better to sit in detention for a few minutes (ours were 30 mins after school) or involve their parents and their money and an attorney.
What my friend from growing up did was crazy, especially as he had nothing in his locker, but he was cocky enough and had resources to make the school back off. The question for the OP is, "Is it really worth it?"
I still support cursing being banned in schools, particularly primary and secondary schools as I feel it promotes respect and common courtesy among individuals.

I cant believe this many people responded to this. Why dont you just look up in your student handbook to see if cursing is allowed. How about you take it and man up
