There are amazing new developments at good prices between 63rd to 67th Cottage Grove to Dorchester. I would almost live there but not quite, at least not with kids. Still, I think that area has more upside than 47th street West of Drexel, or at least it's a safer bet given its greater proximity to U of C, the new police station under construction, etc, etc.

There was a post that had links to stories in the trib about some pioneering condos in Washington Park ( a bit south of 47th and the green line, but close ) with some real issues w/ half sold buildings and such.. Not good .. I'd do some homework and understand you'd be somewhat pioneering , and be close to areas that are still pretty sketchy as far as urban issues go..

I would say not "close to" but "in the middle of". Five homicides in the last year within 8 blocks of 47th and State.

Once you go north of 51st the neighborhood has a different look and feel than what I think of as the Washington Park neighborhood. It feels far less abandoned and, while pretty ugly, isn't nearly as blighted.

There is like nothing around there. State Street is largely "Urban Prairie" down there.
Pretty barren.
That intersection is just north of the Washington Park neighborhood and just east of the Robert Taylor Homes neighborhood.
I would not live there if you paid me to.

Methinks most of the rough crowd has moved over here to NW Indiana. Honestly, how many Illinois plates do you see around here? It's like Chi-town part two.

Because there's nothing there or because it's dangerous? I'm used to being around NOTHING! Barren i could deal with... I currently live on an acre and a half, I have two neighbors on my gravel road (within about eight acres) and the closest commercial building is a ten minute drive... I'd love to look out my window and see more than just farmland, but if i have to be locked in my house and can't enjoy the paved road because my neighbors are too dangerous... it won't be worth it!
Thanks to you all for your replies...
