What parts of bronzeville to stay away from? NW Indiana couple looking to move SW bronzeville
Hi everyone!
My husband and I are looking to move to the city from Northwest Indiana. We're a white/hispanic couple in our mid 20's whose first choice would be the loop (and sorrounding areas)/wicker park/and wrigleyville -all areas we're familiar with- but we can't really get what we want for our money! We found a great updated condo with everything we would need in South West Bronzeville. It seems too good to be true!
I don't know the southside very well at all. I've been reading the posts and i know the closer to the university/ hyde park the better. I've been to hyde park- but not familiar with it- and I love it. And on the map, Southwest Bronzeville seems close enough to hyde park for me and from what i gather, bronzeville is "up and coming." I'm positive we'll make our money back and then some but he's worried about the security and crime in the area (he works alot which means i'll be by myself alot!).
Is this one of the "rough" areas around hyde park that people are talking about? I don't plan on venturing any further west than State st...Will i be okay walking to the green line by myself? or from the greenline to hyde park or the lake?
Any answers or info will help us make our decision! Thanks!

Where exactly are you thinking ? .. Northwest Hyde Park used to be known as 'the rough end' back in the day ( Late 70s thru mid 80s ) .. By Northwest HP I mean North of 54th and West of Greenwood .. This part of HP was not as integrated and 'connected' to the University as points further east, but times might have changed.. Bronzeville certainly has since then ( or some parts, anyway) .

That part of Hyde Park has improved considerably since the 80s, but it is still a bit rough. I have several friends with young kids that live near 53rd and Drexel and they definitely have to deal with a surprising number of trashy people, drug dealers, gang bangers, and occasional violent crime. Still, it's far from the "Badlands" that it was in the 80s (that's what the cops called that area).

I say that area is a dump. If you like it, though, don't let my opinion stop you. Years back I would brace myself just taking the train through there. Now I agree with you it has potential and it's not known as the worst crime area by any stretch, but you'd definitely be a bit of a pioneer. Good luck.

I don't know if i like the area, but the condo itself is georgeous (we've never been there... i've only seen pictures online)... maybe it is too good to be true? I just wanted to know if it's even worth my time to look at it... my main concern is safety, so if it's not THE WORST... it might be worth a walk through... dumps can be cleaned... as long as it's not a dangerous dump!
Thanks so much for your input!

It's not too good to be true. The neighborhood sucks, so you can get a nice new condo for a reasonable price. In the free market rarely if ever does one find something priced out of whack, at least not on the low end.
There is a good reason it is cheap.
