RIVER WEST AREA> SAFE or NOT? (Chicago, Peoria: live, restaurants)

Hi! My fiance and I are looking at a property located around the intersection of Halsted and Chicago in Chicago, IL. The specific street is Peoria. I am unfamiliar with the area, and I wondered if anyone could tell me whether or not they feel safe around here walking alone? For example, coming from the Grand blue line, and walking, would I be ok at night? Are there any recent incidents that you can recall?

Any other advice about this area would be helpful, also. I like that its close to the city, but there doesn't seem to be much liveliness (bars/restaurants/shops) in the vicinity.

That area is OK I think. Pretty heavily police presence because it's right near some somewhat defunct housing projects. I used to work in the 600 W building, never had any problems.

This would be better off in the Chicago forum.
