I just want to know what makes a protest "newsworthy". Is it the sheer number of people that attend? The profile of the people that attend? Is there a consistent metric, because if not, then the media as a whole can consciously or subconsciously introduce a bias based on what they choose to cover.

In J school they teach seven basic "values" of what makes something newsworthy:

UNCP - Journalism - The seven news values held by news media gatekeepers

Well, calling our local newscasters "media gatekeepers" is being too nice to them... Honestly, they were probably just too lazy to send anyone over. Or they didn't know about it. The smart protesters know to call the media well in advance if they want to get attention. The black leaders on the South Side are quite masterful at this.

Oh so blind my little sheep.

Think of the demographics in Chicago...now think about what makes local news profitable...now you have your answers

Do the same thing in a place with a majority of right leaning viewers and you will begin to understand the whole left/right media bias thing is a whole crock of ****. Its about the damn money people.

Then you will see the importance of a free, non-corporatized press.

But still, seriously, a protest of 500 over a stimulus the majority of Americans support is just not big news. If it got even a blip on the 10 o'clock news you should be pleased.

edit: I just looked at the group's own Web site, and it's pretty clear there were NO WHERE NEAR 500 people there. Looks to be 100 tops.

Nah, it's still much more about local media laziness. They don't want to do any actual reporting, so they put on canned stories about the best deal on pantyhose.

Though you could say that lazy reporting saves the station money!

Not really laziness. The stories are aimed at a general public. The stories are also designed to keep their ratings up and have done so for years. What does this tell you about the general public who wants to be fed these fluff stories?
