Hey guys, good info.... that is also helping me to decide where to live.
I'm moving back to the city (after a year of absence) and I've already done the rich, crowded, drunken, area of Lincoln Park. I want to live in Logan Square because it seems diverse and quiet.
I need to know:
What are the 'safe' areas of LS and which are the 'sketchy' ones with gang activity.
I'm a single, white girl living alone, so I really need to know the truth!!
Help.... thanks!!!!

I lived on Kedzie Blvd. near the LS Blue line stop for 5 years with my wife. We never had any issues and really liked Logan Square. Very generally speaking, anywhere near the train stops and by the Blvds (Logan or Kedzie) is fine in my opinion. If you have a specific place in mind you can check out everyblock.com and chicago police crime stats online to get a sense of the types of crime in around a specific area.
We just bought a house in Bronzeville near the lake and if we could have gotten the amazing deal and space we got in Logan Square we would have stayed.
My two cents.

What he said. The closer you are to the Blvd and to train station, the better.

I agree as well - my wife walks to the Blue line, so when we were househunting I simply made a 2 block circle around the Logan and Belmont stops and we wouldn't look at anything that wasn't in that perimeter.

A shooting last night in the really crappy portion of Logan Square near Avondale...
"About 6:45 p.m., a woman in her 20s and a "male in his late teens" were shot in the 3600 block of West Belmont...
The exact location of the incident was in an alley on the 3100 block of North Monticello Avenue, according to a Grand Central District lieutenant.
The woman, who was pregnant, was shot in the lower back..."

You forgot to mention in the back.
Probably not the intended target I would hope. That's just low. Firing handguns is a lot trickier than in the movies some of these kids watch. I doubt they get out to the range much.
