Because a lot of people from Chicago move to Houston and vice versa. Those that come from Chicago to Houston are usually incredibly surprised at what a great place Houston is to live and never look back. I am one of those people. Houstonians love Chicago when they move there, however they generally have a bit of trouble adjusting to the cost of living. And native Texans often have a hard time adjusting because the values are so different. I think Houston is much easier for a Chicagoan to adjust to than Chicago for a Houstonian.
For example, you will be seen as unusual married at age 24. And this holds true even if you live in the suburbs of Chicago.
Why everyone is picking on you for having an inflated sense of self is beyond me. Us Chicago natives have about the most inflated sense of self in the world. "The Windy City" is actually a reference from a long time ago. People from Cincinnati thought we were a bunch of windbags. This dates back from the worlds fair of 1858 or something like that (my grandpa told me that story millions of times).
For those who say you belong in the suburbs, I agree. You are more of the suburban type. Suburban types and city types in Chicago are very different. I grew up in the city until age 13 and was going to attend Senn high school until my mom got remarried and we moved out to Western Springs. I was like Danny Russo in the Karate kid, minus the charm, the good looks and the karate skills. In other words, I was getting picked on constantly for being so urban and "ghetto", which was of course completely silly. People in Western Springs tend to think Berwyn is ghetto.

Ugh. That's one thing I never grew up with was this suburb verses suburb snobbery. Those kids need a punch in the gut from a Berwynite.

It was completely absurd. I grew up in the triangle within Bryn Mawr, Ashland and Ridge and kids acted as if I were some crack dealer from the Robert Taylor Homes.

24 - you should see the po-dunk town i grew up in. Good ole east texas, if your not married by 21 something has got to be wrong with you. I'm 28 and my childhood best friend told me the other day that i really need to start considering my options for marriage as opposed to climbing the corporate ladder with my company and moving to Chicago.
Although i love it at time, I am more than happy to get away from the backwards thinking we have in Texas. The best - 80 degree weather all week long. but 80 degree weather doesn't make everything perfect - just a little bit of it.

I just moved to Chicago from Houston, and I was surprised when I heard someone order a "white soda" on the airplane.
