I spend a good deal of time in and passing through poor neighborhoods and I see plenty of grocery stores pretty much everywhere. Maybe not the cornucopias that one finds all over the upscale neighborhoods but I think "food desert" is at least a little exaggerated.

To hear some say it, an area is a "food desert" if someone can't walk to a full-service grocery store in 10 minutes or less.

true - BUT - the health costs aren't part of that equation.

and the fact is that a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter will go a really, really, really long way.

This thing has been dredged up again I see. When you get to the bottom of this popular liberal cocktail party discussion, you see that it is just business. If you put a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's in one of our bottom 10 community areas, the residents would look at the thing like a UFO landed in the 'hood.

Grocery stores are for-profit entities and go where they believe they will make money. The last 163 posts explain why they wouldn't make money in a typical poor neighborhood. It's sad but is what it is.

I lived in a trailer park paying about $600 a month for rent. Poor neighborhood. Two grocery stores under a half mile away. Easy walking distance--and I often did.

Edit: Even poor people have to eat.

Speaking of that I heard a new Moo and Oink commercial on AM 1000 this afternoon. It was pretty scary. At the end some woman was moaning the words Moo and Oink!

Is there more than one Moo and Oink? I used to go to the one on Stony and 67th or so. I can't imagine they could even afford a radio spot.
