Even the simple "hey can I get your # and we can hang out sometime or get a drink together" can sound a little foreword/wierd to someone. If you live in a complex just be friendly to everyone and ask someone "what do people do around here for fun" or ask if they wanna go get a drink and the first rounds on you. **** I would take you up on that offer.
There are tons of sport clubs and interest groups you can become a part of in Chicago. I would bet half the people that join those kind of things are looking to meet new people.
and is there something wrong with saying - "wanna be friends!!" it tends to work for me! LOL jsut kidding, that is a little akward. I'm a drinker, not the get smashed every weekend kind, but the - its friday night and i want a glass of wine in a crowded place kind. Its a change for me because doing that with someone else is never a big deal or a problem. it looks like now i'll be that person at the local bar drinking in the corner. -
ahhh so sad

Met pretty much all my post high school friends through extracurricular activities, sports, running clubs, dog park, cooking, local volunteering etc.... virtually nobody through work or college or neighbors, though a few here and there. Ones at work became friends AFTER I left a particular job, at work they were just colleagues and liked to keep things professional.
I'm not a big drinker so, bar scene really doesn't work... And even when I DID go to bars in college, the people I met there just weren't those I'd like to hango ut with.

well - we have a problem - my extracurricular activities include bad karoake, bottles of wine, and people watching with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

I'm also a workaholic, of course i work from home.....hmmm, how about reading, i'm a bookworm, preferably summer trash that makes me feel smarter....... a book club, i'm going to join a bad fiction book club where we can talk about what type of shoes the main character was wearing. Maybe i should do volunteer work. I can volunteer to take needy kids shopping for prada. that's it, i'm a GENIUS!

BTW, if you are looking for a one stop shop for activities and groups, Meetup.com is pretty good. You can search all of the meet-ups by zip code or city but there are very, very many so I recommend sticking to your interests first.

I think that's a good thing because that state has a lot of beautiful women.

Exactly!!! you guys should be trilled to have texans coming your way. I know i'm a bit biased but there are more beautiful women in Texas per capita than anywhere i've ever been. Of course the majority of my travel has been to the East Coast so i'm not exactly the best person to ask on anywhere other than that.
