well, it's still free on Thursday night, right?

I don't expect to get free admission just b/c I live here (I'm still shocked the LP zoo is completely free), but that is a rather steep increase in prices, especially for seniors/students ($5 to $12). this price increase will just mean more locals will be lining up to get in on Thursdays, and on this night, the museum is VERY crowded as it is. tourists won't care that much, IMO. I never knew the museum was free a few years ago and most tourists won't have the anger many locals feel about the increase in prices over the years. the museum is so hyped up now that people will still come

I like the museum, especially if I can get in for free, but I felt quite underwhelmed in many of the exhibits. last I went, the giant room near the stairs was still under construction and was bare, not sure if that's going to be a traveling exhibit or not. the upstairs exhibits w/ the European paintings are unbelievable, but the downstairs exhibits (Africa, Native America I think, along w/ the Greco-Roman stuff) is a bit underwhelming IMHO and not worth seeing over multiple visits. hopefully they can expand a bit and add in more stuff at that price

There was some mismanagement issues a few years ago, I don't think they have recovered from that. It is the second largest art museum in the US, but I agree, $18.00 is too high.

Once the Modern Wing opens in a couple months, the exhibits will be greatly expanded. They will be able to display a lot of the things that have been kept in storage due to space limitations, and of course all the modern works will return which have been scattered around for the past few years while the building has been built.

I think the area you're talking about near the stairs (where they used to display the armour and religious relics), has since been filled in. It was in transition while they moved some exhibits around.

Thanks for the update. I love when people update threads.

IMO this a smokescreen to aid these Alderman's re-election efforts. While it is a good thing for Chicago residents and tourists alike-where were these morons when the parking meter sale happened?

I would still vote against at least 90% of the City Council if I could.

Here is the history of most major art museums in the U.S.:

1) Robber baron becomes fabulously wealthy in the Gilded Age.
2) Robber baron or his family get bored of making lots of money off the backs of immigrants, so starts collecting art.
3) Robber baron collect so much art, his attic starts looking like your grandmothers.
4) Robber baron dies, family doesn't want all that crap in attic, so donates it to city for a museum.
5) City accepts art, but can't afford the upkeep so they create nonprofit to be run by society types.
6) Society types raise money (from themselves or other rich people) to pay for upkeep and/or building.
7) New society types bored with old collection, raise more money to buy new stuff.
8) Collection outgrows old building and starts to look like grandma's attic again. So raise more money to expand or buy new building.
9) The new new society types cannot raise sufficient money to keep the new museum operating. Start requesting voluntary contributions in lieu of admission and donations from people who aren't rich.
10) Repeat 7 through 9. Start charging mandatory admission.
11) Repeat 7 through 10. Start charging higher admission.
12) Repeat 7 through 11. Charge such a high admission rate to soak visiting tourists, only economical way to visit museum is to buy a membership.
13) If still insolvent, eventually sells collection to Madame Toussad's, Disney, or Six Flags. Admission is now $65, but includes a 20% coupon to theme park.

Excellent post Slim.

The same thing goes for mansions which have been turned over to state and local government and maintained as monuments to their former owner's glory at taxpayer expense.
