Not to change the subject, but if you really love ice, try checking out Pykecrete...pretty amazing building material if you ask me. I made a hand plane out of the stuff just to see if it would work. It did!

Ice is a very cool thing, and being from Maine it was heavily traded for quite a few years. In fact that is where ice cream got its roots. A Boston man decided that we had lots of ice in New England and that in the Caribbean they had none. He brought ice cream on a ship and gave it away to the natives. It took sometime but ultimately they got hooked on it and the ice began to flow from Maine to the Caribbean at an unprecedented level.
Ships sailed down with ice to the Caribbean and they hauled molasses back which is obviously used in the making of baked beans. To this day the baked bean industry is alive in New England and certainly where Boston gets the nickname "Bean Town".
As for the ships...it was the kind of ship seafarers wanted desperately to get on. Not only would the cargo be sold for a high profit...it ensured the sailors aboard would not drown because since ice floats, a ship laden with ice was unsinkable!
