A lot of my acquaintances here are carless and use I-Go or Zip Car car-sharing services for those kinds of trips . One of them can even be tied in with your CTA card, though I'm not sure which.

You mention the Damen bus. Is that because someone requires the Damen bus, specifically, for transportation? Just curious. That Oakley address would be my pick, if access to the Damen bus wasn't a dealbreaker.

Yes, I'll be going to UIC/the medical campus and was told by several people that the Damen bus would be a good option. The apartment on Oakley does look lovely, being right across from the park, so I'm thinking I'd be willing to make the 10-15 minute walk to the bus each day. Of course, I say that now before having experienced winter there! Thanks for your thoughts on it!
Anyone know about how long it would take the #50 Damen to get from its Brown Line stop to the medical district stop? I'm trying to use the CTA trip planner but it's confounding me and keeps suggesting other, less direct bus routes! I must be doing something, perhaps this is a sign that I should just go to bed! : )

Oh, the Damen bus would be a good option -- if you lived in Ukrainian Village maybe. As for taking the Damen bus all the way down to the Medical District from Lincoln Square... you might as well toss a saddle on a tree sloth and ride it down there because you'd get there just as soon. I would take the Brown Line downtown and transfer to the Blue Line to the medical district. That would probably cut about 10 to 15 minutes out of your commute.

d'oh! I was so hoping that bus would be a good option! I'll probably try/time it once, just for experimental purposes but stick to the brown line otherwise.

I doubt the bus would be all that longer than the brown line to the blue line -- It'll be an hour plus either way.

^ It can and will be much worse on the bus when it is snowing. You know this first hand from last winter. ^

What's the deal with the parking on Ravenswood Ave just East of the Montrose Brown Line stop and on either side of the metra tracks (in between Montrose and Cullom)? Is this Metra parking? We parked our U Haul here a few weeks back, on the east side of the tracks, and it seemed like an unmarked parking oasis- on the west side the stalls are numbered but east side no numbers, no signage. When I asked about it at the ice cream place nearby they said that we would have to move the car by 7am and it was a high car prowl area. Either of these true? We don't have a car now but will have relatives visit and I'd love to be able to advise them to park/not park here.
Also, anyone know of a bar near Ravenswood/Lincoln Square showing the Tour de France?
Thanks again to all those who advised on finding an apartment in this area- been here only a couple weeks but really enjoying it so far!
