I work in the West Loop area (Van Buren & Canal). The number of empty spaces on a weekday is astounding. A year ago I had to park all the way to Green Street when I drove to work on a Saturday. I simply won't bring my automobile into the city any more. With the parking and the 11% sales tax for the Stroger Family Relief Fund, the utterly unnecessary expense of doing anything in Chicago has gone completely over the top. And now the state wants to set up electronic speed traps on the expressways.
One of the nicest things about Chicago used to be how inexpensive things were compared to other big American cities. No more. I hope to God this revolt continues to build till the Assembly/Board/Council all get the idea that these turnips are pretty much bled out and aren't going to put up with it any more.

Glad I have a garage... which I'm sure the city is looking for a way to install a parking meter in.

In some places you already see meters about 100-150 feet up the sides of residential streets where they intersect with metered thoroughfares.
And I bet you're going to start seeing a lot more of it too, and probably more petitions for zoned parking on side streets. Places that used to be lined with cars are half empty now. I'm talking about premium corridors like Lincoln Avenue and Southport Avenue through Lakeview. Businesses thought this would be great because it would increase turnover. What it appears to have done instead is just plain caused people to stay away. But what it also seems to have done is increase the parking pressure on side streets near business corridors as people look for meter-free alternatives. Hence my speculation that we may start seeing more neighborhoods petition to get zoned parking, and oh yeah, that's another $25 per year per car the city conveniently gets to collect from people who live in those zones.
Oh, and it gets better still. I didn't realize this until I read it in a Carol Marin column... but not only do the police have the authority to issue tickets for meter violations as they always have... but now LAZ has the authority to issue tickets as well. I wonder if they will have a Kangaroo Court disguised as an administrative hearing board just like the city does.

I have noticed portions of streets that have meters (that used to be always packed) like Lincoln between Wrightwood and Diversey as well as Wells between Hubbard and Chicago very barren even in the middle of the day in the last couple weeks.

I don't have time to read the whole thread. I still have contacts in Chicago who keep me up to date on this and other issues. The parking meter thing certainly doesn't make me want to come back for a visit, let alone live there again. When are Chicago voters going to realize that over five decades of sheep like obsequious behavior has brought them to this state? It wouldn't totally surprise me if both Daley and Stroger are returned to office. Good luck with the Olympics.
