My landlord is an old man who's owned the building since the 50s. He lives above me and a couple of times a week I can hear him watching his "special" movies on full volume.

"Chicago is a way expensive place to live! "

Compared to the rest of the Midwest? Sure. Compared to the coasts? Not so much. We're looking at a bunch of luxury hi-rise doorman 1-BR with all utilities included in River North that are all under $2k. To me, that's rediculously cheap.

$875 for a huge 1 bedroom in Edgewater (near Clark & Granville). I'm impressed with the size. Big L shaped living room, long hallway, and a big dining room that we just use as a second living room/lair for my husband and his computer, as well as a couch that our dog is allowed on.

We only pay for cooking gas and electricity (we'd pay for cable if we wanted it). Water and heat are included, as is a storage unit, and laundry on site. Top floor, so nobody above us. I think that about covers it. I'll just have to use window unit a/c for the first time, so I need to learn how to install them. ha. As a side note, you can apparently save several hundred by getting $30 air conditioners from craigslist in January.

The mortgages on my two properties in Chicago cost less than most of the prices quoted in this thread. Good heavens

In Downtown St. Louis you can get a nice 1BR for $800/month I think. Some apartment buildings use the affordable alternative rate, though.

A friend of mine who lives on Lake and Desplaines(West Loop) pays 1600 a month for two bedroom, with a deck over looking desplaines.ave includes washer and dryer. If you ask me that's a good deal, he only pays 800 b/c he has a roommate.
