Default Evening Day care or 24-Hour?!?

Hello Everyone,
I am relocating to Chicago this week, starting a new job with Cook County Juvenile Court. I am a single mother of a 7-year old and was wondering if any parents out there know of any evening day care facilities? I will more than likely be working the 2-10pm shift. My daughter is not coming out until the summer (I will need summer care too for my shift), so I have some time to look, before she comes out. I am even open to private home day care, as long as it is a woman that has no men living in her house and prefer someone who is over 35 if I need to go this route.

Oh, more than likely I will be living on the southside of Chicago, if that helps with where I should look at for these types of facilities.

Thank you all for your help.

Good luck finding a woman who is 35 and over not living with a man. I'm sure there are some out there but would you really want your baby around multiple cats?

Did you try going through a nanny agency?

There are a lot of nannies who have verifiable references and you can do background checks, but most that I've seen are young women (mid 20's) who just want to make a career out of caring for children. Many will come to your home. I was looking into nannying, but I'm 23 and I have a husband.

In fact, more often than not, I think nannies come to your home to care for the kids. Honestly I'd rather go to someone else's place even to just babysit, because there would be no danger of their child being injured in my home, just as I'd rather have a nanny come to my place if I had a child. Of course, I wouldn't be worried if it were a home daycare situation.

I know nothing about 24 hour daycare centers... the idea makes me feel uneasy, but I'm not sure why. I know they exist, though.

If you're willing to try a younger nanny, think of it this way: she's probably going to be a lot more active and fun for your daughter, as well as easier for her to relate to.

Thank you for the information, maybe I should clarify. I don't mind a younger person if they are coming to my house, however, if my daughter had to go to their home, I would feel easier with someone more experienced, that is where the age thing came in. I also am uneasy with the 24-hour day care facility but at this point, I do not have too many options and I will have the 2nd shift. I am just thinking that there must be single moms out there that work the 2nd or even 3rd shift and whom do they allow to care for their child(ren) if no relative is available. I did take a look on cragislist and there are a few out there, at the same token, being new to a city, leaves me leary with trusting such a source with my most precious gift. Again, any suggestions are appreciated.

I did not try the nanny thing, however, I feel that could be a great fit, because this way my daughter is still in her own home and in bed at a decent hour for school the next day. This is a great suggestion. Thank you.

Your welcome

You could also consider a nanny share which would help with the child care expense.
I agree that the ideal situation would be for your daughter to remain at home while being cared after. A nanny share may be a good fit for you and your daughter especially if she is an only child.

Yes, she is an only child and do you know how a nanny-share works, or would the agency provide me with that information? I am assuming that you basically share the nanny services with another parent on some sort of rotating shift. Is this correct?

Yeah I'm sure different agency's have different arrangements.
You can go that route through an agency but that will cost you a fee. If you can find someone to share with on your own that would save you some money but you would have to do your own background checks and all that which nanny services usually include with their fee.
You could start by looking on craigslist or even just reaching out to someone with your own ad.

Ok, great thanks. I think the agency thing may be the best way to go. I truly appreciate your assistance.
